Everyday Tarot, 5/2/11: Smashed Plates and the Reversed 2 of Pentacles

inverted-two-pentaclesI am a secret perfectionist, although I don’t consider myself a control freak. That sounds contradictory, but I’ve learned to aim my mega-Virgo “this is how it HAS to be” vibe at myself most often. I have no Cardinal  to speak of, so no drive to direct the entire band. I only need to stay in tune myself to remain content. And really, that’s more than enough.

Today’s Tarot is the reversed Two of Pentacles—the “Lord of Harmonious Change.” Har!  Didn’t take long for a theme to emerge, huh? No wonder she’s on her head! I’m leaking, not having felt all that harmonious lately, making changes I’ve needed to make. Associated with Jupiter (too much!) in Capricorn (responsibility), this card is all about juggling those competing needs and demands. It all depends on the juggler, doesn’t it?

I most often see this card when there is just a LOT going on. Sometimes the coins  juggled represent vital interests and there is are real needs being fulfilled, although not always. But what’s generally consistent, especially when this card comes up inverted, is that doing the juggling is HARD and there are worries you won’t be able to maintain indefinitely.

juggling-animalsThe question to ask is, “What’s important here?” You want to know if your efforts are still doing what you intended or if circumstances have changed. It’s also a heads-up to acknowledge all you are and have accomplished. Often, it’s also a compelling call to seek out support. Who feeds you? Who has the skills and interests and ability to help? How can your needs and interests align with others to make the tasks less demanding.

I always think in terms of personal energy—as in, it’s a finite resource as long as we walk about on this material plane. So to do the most, the best, to aim the highest, you have to look at how your energy is managed, magnifying the good. That means evaluating and reviewing regularly, as well associating yourself with like-minded others.  Don’t be afraid to let go of what’s not serving anybody or change the tasks you’re juggling. It stings as you let go, but the relief that follows salves the rawness. Life is dynamic. If we’re not, we’ll miss the mark.

How are you doing with your juggling act?

Everyday Tarot, 5/01/11: Fresh Out of Perfect!

Inverted Five of Swords: Good Enough

Jesus Christ. I mean, really! Just…Jesus Christ.

Okay. Okay. I absolutely KNOW not to kvetch and moan about what the cards have to say, because every time I do, I pay for it without exception. But still…I was excited, to draw the first card for my new “Everyday Tarot” column. I expected something…I dunno. Special. Like me!

I did the full-on reading prep. I lit my incense and meditated and prayed and even used some of my homemade Psychic Oil, whipped up under that mega-Neptune Pisces moon a while back. I was ready for magic–a good, solid sign to start off today’s run.

Secretly? I was really hoping to draw the Fool. How perfect would that be, huh? A Major Arcana card at the very least! Except you don’t tell Tarot what you want to see.Tarot tells you what it wants you to see.

Um, yeah. You’d think I’d know that by now.

Five of Swords Today’s Tarot is the Five of Swords, inverted. Also known as “The Lord of Defeat,” he’s associated with Venus in Aquarius. Maybe I should try on some of that famous Antiquarian detachment, huh? Like all Tarot fives, you see this fella pop up surrounding conflict, or to answer the question of who’s running away with the prize. Inverted, don’t expect or strive for a clean sweep. Good enough is good enough here.

The featured rendition from the The Housewives Tarot emphasizes the perfectionism question especially. All those scissors, all those threads hanging off make quite a mess! But you know, the dress still fits. Those details are relevant and important, and the seamstress will get to them in due time. But driving yourself crazy with all those tiny threads can easily lead to overwhelm and maybe even some accidental stabbing!

I have spent the last few days feverishly tweaking this website in preparation for starting Everyday Tarot. I fussed and mussed with code and graphics and thought and planned and did everything I could think of to start out strong. I wanted it to be perfect! Profound! Insightful and delightful! (I think all those kind comments I got ending the Daily Tarot went to my head.)

All that striving for perfection left me finding fault with what I might ordinarily consider to be an excellent initial effort. Those remaining threads will just have to wait. As I told a client yesterday, “We’re fresh out of perfect.” And we are. So today, we’ve got the best I can manage. That’s often better than I give myself credit for. You too? And really, good enough IS good enough. Because it has to be.

Are you happy with the best you can manage?

What about the Daily Tarot?

I’ve had a number of folks ask about the daily Tarot column from ElsaElsa.com, as today’s was my last. I’ve been very, very touched by the kind comments and emails. Thank you!

I love Elsa and the crew that frequents the place, so realizing it was time to travel my own path was bittersweet to say the least. (I still plan on hanging out at the bar!) But I’ll always be thankful for the wonderful opportunities granted me there, not the least of which was realizing how very much I enjoy doing this work. Which leads me here, to start my own journey. I’m foolish. So this should work, right?

To those who’ve asked, yes, I do plan to keep writing. The discipline of a daily column has been a growing experience, and the constant seeking for something useful to say to you gave me pockets of perspective, dealt by the Tarot and much  aimed straight at me. It’s like Tarot meditation.

So for now, I’ll keep doing it if you’ll keep reading it. Deal? Look for more from me around May 1st. And thanks for all the fish!

I’ll be reading Tarot at the Kansas City Spirit Fair, February 26 and 27, 2011. Since this is my first fair (I know! You’d have thought by now, I’d have done one, but no!), I’ll be reading for “Love Donations.” It’s a chance to meet new folks and give back some some of the blessings I’ve enjoyed from attending psychic fairs. I’ll be there for the whole time, so if you’re within range, I’d love to see you!

And if you haven’t ever gotten to attend an Angel Messages/Billets session with Cyndy Green, you’re missing out! Cyndy and Tidbit are fun, helpful and hilarious all at once. I’ve been amazed at the insights I’ve taken from the ones I’ve attended. Highly recommended.

I’m excited.
