Everyday Tarot, 05/20/11: Misunderstood Strength / Queen of Swords

Queen of SwordsAs someone who counsels others, I’m not without awareness it’s a whole lot easier to give suggestions than to take them. Knowing intellectually and knowing emotionally are two entirely different animals, and the twain doesn’t always meet. Feelings are a strength, but it also takes strength to manage them!

Everyday Tarot, 05/19/11: Cure for Greener Grass / Inverted Two of Wands

daily-tarot-forecast-two-wands-housewivesI used to annoy my kids to no end, promising them their childhood was a wonderful, magical time in their lives they should savor instead of wishing away. To them, the absolute freedom of being grown up, the right to pick dinners and bedtimes and television shows to watch represented absolute Nirvana. Turning 18 was the promised land and nothing anybody said was going to convince them adulthood was anything short of moonbeams and fairy dust that all goodness is crafted from. No matter how many times I did my “with privilege comes responsibility” spiel, it just didn’t make a dent.

Until they grew up and moved out, that is.

wands02sToday’s Tarot Forecast is the inverted Two of Wands or  “Lord of Dominion,” associated with Mars in Aries. As one of the Tarot Twos, there is emphasis on duality. You’ll often see this card show up when there are mixed feelings over an accomplishment, as Tarot Twos always highlight duality. Generally, it does speak to a realm you have some mastery over and there’s indication of success overall, but not a sense of being done yet. You’re a great housekeeper, but maybe you don’t know which mess it’s your job to clean up! Inverted, maybe you’d be better off dropping them all.

grass greener fence iStock_000011126842Small-resized-600When you see the inverted Two of Wands, it’s not a bad time to question your assumptions—both over how “made” somebody else has it and how made your own life is. Look at what job belongs to whom, and ask yourself if you’re doing your own well enough, addressing your priorities in a way you’re satisfied with. Use a Mars focus for your energy now—focus on yourself and what YOU want to get done. The rest will sort itself out and you’ll feel less unsettled for it.

Who do you think has it made?

Everyday Tarot, 05/18/11: Making Friends with the Mustard / Death

death-card-housewives-tarotAdjusting to new realities as transitions progress is still on my radar, and it’s not just for me. Seeing it in consultation left and right; folks are in the process of getting oriented to new territory, after going through some sort of explosion, shot off amidst the Aries smack down.

Today, it’s Death or “Lord of the Gates of Death,” associated with Scorpio. Number XIII of the Trumps, it becomes one the Tarot Fours after reducing, so we’re talking about a stable condition. That jar of mayo is never returning to edible, man! If you stare at it long enough, it may turn some interesting colors. But the risk of contamination probably isn’t worth indulging an intellectual curiosity.

“There’s an empty space where the mayo used to sit and my sandwiches are never going to taste good again,” you could say. And as long as you’re there, you’ll have trouble enjoying anything else. Even the finest condiments pale in comparison to an idealized memory.  Reality can’t compete.

Or you might be tempted to nibble still—enough to get the punch without getting ill. Yeah…um… Hope that works out for you. Me? I’m thinking making friends with the mustard is a better idea!

Would you be my friend?Death is such an interesting card—I know people dislike it and get why, but I usually find it encouraging. I don’t believe in “good” and “bad” cards any more than good or bad planets. There IS easy and hard, however. Death is hard. But it’s also significant—Death refers to major changes. I’ll take significant over easy any day. If you don’t make room by clearing out the old, however much it’s meant to you, you’ll not have a place in your life for the new.

Tarot reminds us to let go of the past. Some mourning is likely, but rancor is optional. The sooner you clean out the energy space, the sooner that vacuum is filled with something fresh and (hopefully) wonderful!

Have you made friends with your mustard?

Everyday Tarot, May 17, 2011: And…Exhale / Inverted Four of Swords

inverted-four-swords-daily-tarot-forecast-housewives.jpgWith the sky lighting up Taurus now, we’re moving from our testosterone-enhanced spring, and energy has downshifted. Whatever you started under the Mars itch will begin to feel more settled as you move your attention to the day-to-day living of it. Now is when the vision gets fleshed out in the real world, but like anything that’s got the Bull’s hoof prints on it, it doesn’t happen fast!

Four of SwordsToday’s Tarot is the inverted Four of Swords or “Lord of Rest from Strife,” associated with Jupiter in Libra. Man, rest from strife sounds nice, huh? Most often when I see this card, I think, “And…exhale.” Because it shows up with the situation is stable (Tarot Fours) and you’ve got a window of opportunity for a nap—refresh and regenerate is the first order of business. It will clear your head (Tarot Swords). Inverted, we’re not in full on rest mode, but may be moving into in, moving out of it, or in sore need of it!

The traditional version of the Four of Swords shows a stained glass window—he’s in a spiritual sanctuary, where he can lay down his sword and let go of his worries completely. He’s so withdrawn he looks almost dead! Just like our cucumber-eyed housewife, the break from the world gives needed clarity and energy when it’s time to return to the battle, be it a sword fight to the death or just sales day at Macy’s.

I’m finding my rhythm here at A Fool’s Journey and doing the day-to-day work of fleshing out what I’ve started on the tail end of the Aries party. It’s a lot less stress than launching a new site…and a lot slower going. I’m right here with the inverted Four of Swords, and see our happy housewife’s beauty routine as a great reminder that I  best shine if I schedule time for me. Don’t want those pores to start clogging on me. And…breathe.

Are you getting a chance to exhale yet?

Everyday Tarot, 05/16/11: King of Pentacles is my Safety Net

IMG_1234The King of Pentacles or “Prince of the Chariot of Earth” is associated with Fire in Earth. He’s a very fatherly sort, and likes to look after and provide for his kingdom.  He tends to their physical needs the way the King of Cups attends to emotional needs. He’s solid and steadfast and true. In a word, he’s grounding.

That’s why I like to have my husband with me, when I’m around my family. He’s my King of Pentacles. I’ve had a very hard time with my family and while it’s generally okay now, I’m not beyond getting triggered.  I feel more stable when I’m with him, and if something happens that might throw me off balance (as sometimes does), having him there makes it easier. I know he loves me, and will look out for me if I start to lose footing. He’s my safety net.

Everyday Tarot, 05/15/11: Practice What You Preach / Inverted Seven of Swords

seven-swords-daily-tarot-forecast-morgan-greer“A reputation once broken may possibly be repaired, but the world will always keep their eyes on the spot where the crack was.” –Joseph Hall

Sometimes, operating under-the-radar or without explicit permission is an excellent idea. Other times, not so much. But regardless, it’s always advisable to live in such a way you could be proud if your choices became public knowledge.
