High Priestess & Eight of Cups Rx: Riding it Out

I had to go grocery shopping a couple of days ago. I wasn’t sure what to expect given the fact that the Coronavirus seems to have just penetrated the mass consciousness of America and people are shopping like there’s no tomorrow.

But we were running out of food. I was about to run out of coffee creamer, for goodness sakes!

Ample coffee creamer is synonymous with “civilization” in my world.

I wasn’t entirely surprised to find no toilet paper–the aisles at Aldi’s had been picked clean. A lonely, beat-up tissue box was all that remained (after I tossed a couple boxes into my cart, because…well, no toilet paper). I decided not to grab the last tissue box in case someone else needed it more.

No more toilet paper or tissues.

I’ve seen many admonitions not to panic. I’m sure somebody somewhere is panicking, but it wasn’t what I personally witnessed. People were focused for sure, but most were not giving out cranky or anxious vibes. Overall, I was feeling a sense of camaraderie. People were kind to me and one another, albeit across increased personal space.

I don’t think of more aggressive shopping as proof positive of mass panic. Folks want to have a good supply of toilet paper and soap (and yes, coffee creamer) because this provides a sense of predictability and control. That’s what’s lacking in the bigger world right now. It feels like doing something, you know? People are preparing to hunker down and ride things out if need be, and would like to be comfortable doing so.

In a weird way, I found the whole experience oddly comforting. Realizing most of us have a lifestyle such that having enough toilet tissue, hand soap and Ramen in the cabinet qualifies as disaster preparedness? It drives the point home: most of us live a very good life!

Next week, I’m expecting the mass vibe to be very similar to this shopping trip.

Next Week in Tarot

For outlook this week, we’ve got the High Priestess. On advice, the Eight of Cups is joined by the Tower, all from the Radiant Rider-Waite deck.

There’s plenty going on, but much more is under the surface than out in the open. So you can’t really put your finger on issues directly so much as you can just FEEL it. Your spidey senses will do the best job of guiding you this week (as always).

We’d be well advised not to make any grand, sweeping gestures this week. Don’t burn any bridges. There could be an itch to “get things settled, once and for all” but there won’t be a need to scratch it. Bridges that most need burning are likely to spontaneously combust. If you take a step back emotionally, you’re far less likely to feel the heat.

Let events sort themselves out because they will–potentially with great drama and fanfare. Tower energy isn’t exactly subtle. The upside of the Tower sort of disruption is that it tends to be quick. Dramatic, sure. But usually it’s not going to drag on and on. Once the Tower begins to fall, it’s coming down and there will be no stopping it. Our choice is only in how close we’re standing to ground zero.

The key point here is that any drama does NOT have to be largely disruptive on a personal level. Step back. Let go what you can and wait for what you cannot let go to settle down.  It will.

The world is a little weird right now. But that’s okay. We can be okay individually, weirdness in the bigger world or not. Take a step back and ride it out!

Page of Cups Reversed: Homemade Peace

Our experience of reality is never the sum total of some sort of objective facts, although we certainly may be looking intently at those facts. The meaning we give, the explanations and assumptions made to draw conclusions, is central to how we feel about whatever we see. That meaning is all internally generated.

We take observations and we run them through our own filter of what we consider reasonable, how we would respond, and what makes sense to us in order to make sense out of what we see. Sometimes, the conclusions can generate compassion or understanding but a lot of the time, they just sow discord.

People talk about the “benefit of a doubt” as if it’s something you offer to others, a way of not assuming they’re evil or something. Personally, I find a generous appraisal benefits me more than the recipient. I don’t care if it’s objectively accurate or not. I just care that my own conclusions are comfortable for ME.

That doesn’t make me a doormat by any stretch. I can assume the best without further engagement. The point is to adopt the perspective that serves myself best and nothing else…Next week might be a good time to test this strategy.

Next Week in Tarot

Outlook next week is represented by the reversed Page of Cups, with advice being the Eight of Cups. These lovely cards are from the Crystal Visions Tarot.

Expect an emotionally intense week. That’s the bad news, or at least maybe bad news. Kind of depends on the emotions, you know? The good news is that periods of extra emotionality aren’t extended. The Page of Cups is pretty easily distracted or soothed, even by simple things.

The trick is going to be in the advice: Know what to step away from. I’ve got Kenny singing the Gambler in my head. “…know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em. Know when to walk away and know when to run.”

The righteously indignant may be correct about some of their assumptions, but they are not going to be happy. If your vision of happiness requires cooperation, you’re at the mercy of outside forces and even if you can line some of them up, you’ll never line them all up all the time. It’s a losing proposition.

I”m not saying don’t care about anybody else. That’s not a formula for happiness! I’m saying assume the best you can manage and direct your toward something you can positively impact. It may sound trite but this is how you become part of the solution. It’s also a much better way to live.

The only peace that’s dependable is the homemade kind.

Do you make your own peace?

Lovers: What’s Your Mission?

I’ve been self-employed for years now. It might surprise people who know (non-conformist) me  to hear I often use mission statements with my business ventures. The idea used to strike me as silly, but I came around once I experimented using them.

Ethical questions or practical considerations or choosing what to prioritize are all important parts of the day-to-day journey for any undertaking.  Choice is unavoidable. When you have articulated a big-picture mission, it’s much easier to make sure your day-to-day choices are aligned with that mission.

The mission is the bigger picture, the whole painting. But the individual decisions are the single brush strokes that make up the painting. Next week might be a good time to set the mission and let it guide you through the brush stokes.

Lovers High Priestess Revesed

Outlook for the week is courtesy The Lovers, with advice from the High Priestess reversed and clarified by the Three of Swords. These cards are from the Crystal Visions Tarot deck.

In the coming week, we’ve got a job to do: getting clear on what matters.

The High Priestess reversed would advise we ACT in concert with our choices and priorities. If not, we stand to lose here (says the Three of Swords).

This isn’t about having the whole scenario mapped out, by the way. If you wait for that, you’re going to miss your window of opportunity. This is a very in-the-moment, clarity-driven, in-touch-with-your-intentions vibe.

Know your mission. Know what’s most important. Know what you want, big picture. Then for each individual choice that comes up, you can use that big-picture perspective to determine which way to turn at the forks.

Success in this environment won’t come from over-orchestration. The idea of ends justifying the means will backfire.

Be true to yourself with each brush stroke and let the painting work itself out.

Fool Reversed: Silly Mistakes or Opportunities to Excel?

The more I notice, the more I find it stunning how much of our experience is directly driven by perception as opposed to those “cold, hard facts” we think we’re reacting to instead.

It’s not just the obvious like people of different political bents watching entirely different movies when they read the news. It’s not just things like generational differences or how we see the world versus how our parents see it.

It’s more like all of life is a big, fat Rorschach test.

I can especially see this in myself. The difference between considering myself a hot mess versus seeing myself thriving does not really come from the preponderance of evidence. I know this because I have sometimes shifted my perspective when the outside reality is the same.

Instead, the feelings are a function of the conclusions we make about the evidence. This is very good news, because that can be consciously driven.

Next week, we’ll most likely see plenty of room for improvement in your private world. You can either call that “failure” or you can call it a grand opportunity to clean up and level up.

I’m going with door number two here. Hope you’ll join me in the winner’s circle!

Next Week in Tarot

For the outlook next week, we have The Fool reversed. Advice is the Ten of Wands. (Outch!) Pictured here from the Radiant Rider-Waite deck. It’s Mercury retrograde, folks–February 16 to March 9th. The forecast here seemed to notice.

Expect bits and pieces of our world to be upside down. I’m seeing significant potential for foolish mistakes, overlooking the obvious or simply not thinking things through in the coming week.

To deal with this, be responsible for managing important details. If it’s going out with your name on it, I’d advise you to do the final review personally. You might be able to delegate the initial project, but the last (and full) pass-through needs to be personally performed, with full attention.  The Ten of Wands won’t have us skim or multitask our way through the final review.

But what is this period good for (besides taking on extra work)? Edit and rework processes to your heart’s content. Reconsider and revise your work flow, your projects, your management process! Any process is ripe for revisiting during the retrograde, with extra attention to communication flows. Inefficiencies or problem areas will be easy to spot now and the extra effort reworking them pays off.

I’m happy to put in the effort required to clean up my world, though. How about you?

Four of Pentacles & Hierophant Rx: Forget the Peanut (Butter) Gallery

A long time ago, I was making two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Four slices of bread laid out in a row, happily going about my business.

My kid surveyed my progress, and was quite bothered. She accused me of being intentionally difficult.

Evidently, when you lay the bread out in a row, you’re not supposed to put peanut butter on different sides for each sandwich. You’re supposed to put the peanut butter either all on the left pieces of bread or on the right, so an alternating pattern of peanut butter and jelly is maintained during the sandwich construction.

Somehow, this practice is deemed necessary to maintain a civilized society. Or something like that…

She thinks I live for chaos. I don’t know that I could argue with that conclusion convincingly. But she was taken aback to learn that in this case, I did have a reason for my choice.

See, the bread had sizable holes. So I strategically placed peanut butter over the largest holes to minimize jelly leakage. This was a more important objective than conforming. She saw me doing something “wrong” just to be different. I saw less potential for sporting jelly stains the rest of the day.

The point of this silly little story is that even people that know you very well cannot always comprehend exactly why you do what you do, in the way you do it. But that’s okay.

Nobody needs to get you here. Make your sandwiches however you want next week and forget the peanut (butter) gallery.

Next Week in Tarot

This week, the Four of Pentacles provides the general outlook, with advice coming in as the Hierophant reversed and clarified by the Eight of Pentacles. These cards are from the familiar Radiant Rider-Waite deck.

With a Four of Pentacles forecast, I’d expect to see plenty of stabilizing in general, or maybe “attempts to stabilize” would be more accurate in some cases. This doesn’t mean people still won’t be anxious, however. Far from it. The Four of Pentacles often heralds either general anxiety or feelings of insecurity, especially financial. (Look at how tightly he guards those Pentacles).

But anxious or not, you can expect to make it through the week just fine.

In terms of advice, it’s easy to follow: Do what works for you, period. Take it one step at a time, one foot in front of the other. It’s not all about the long term right now. It’s about making it through the moment, doing what you need to do and working your way through.

In particular, don’t bother about what “normal” people would accomplish what you’ve got to accomplish. This information is not applicable, so no cases of the guilties if you don’t live up to perceived societal expectations.

If it works for YOU, then it’s a good plan. I’m of a mind that’s always true, but I suspect others may also join me in that conclusion during the week.

Are you able to “just do you?”

The Lovers: Finding Your Truth (and Living Accordingly)

Last week, in doing those experimental Spirit Message readings, I found myself getting more visuals than normal. During readings, it’s very common for me to see pictures in my head. They’re usually metaphorical, but sometimes literal. I think maybe the extra extra energy devoted to meditation along with the even stronger intention to “see” for these may have made the difference. I’m going to keep playing with it (for all my readings) because it was helpful.

It’s kind of funny to me, really. The Spirit Messages were about checking in with invisible friends. Guides, Spirits, Angels, or dead folks, what-have-you. But I don’t really think of these entities the same way many card-slingers do.

I consider all my beliefs to be no more than a “working definition” of how the Universe works. (This is one way to avoid feeling like an idiot when your perception of reality shifts, as my has many times over the course of my life.)

So I speak from personal experience, absolutely, but I don’t assume my interpretation of my own experience is going to match anyone else’s or even my own at a different juncture. I don’t feel like I have access to the final word on what’s “real.” Everything we experience as reality must first go through the filter of our perception, after all. I know my perception shifts and expect it to continue indefinitely. So who am I to say?

Before I got so woo, for example, I would have utterly pooh-poohed the idea of spirit guides. Not logical enough to suit all my Virgo! I am sure I obnoxiously rolled my eyes into the next week, when the topic came up. But now?

Well, I’ve met a lot of guides, distinctly recognizable to the folks I was reading for. The messages they shared were relevant. Hard to deny those who you’ve met. Even tougher when the messages are solid.

I’ve seen angels when reading for people who work with angels. I’ve also seen dead people and Gods and saints and animals–each depending on who I’m reading for. I learned not to overthink it. Just present it all as I perceive it presented to me.  I don’t know for a take-it-to-court kind of fact what, precisely, I’m tuning into in each of these instances. I just know that it’s consistently most helpful to when I faithfully convey whatever I get, in whatever way I get it.

Sometimes the people I work with  worry that I’ll find their interpretation of the energy they are feeling “crazy.” I always laugh and reply, “You know what I do for a living here, right?”

If you think of everything as being an expression of energy as I do, the idea individuals may translate and envision the same energetic forces differently doesn’t seem so far-fetched. I’ve long since stopped asking myself what’s literally “real” so much as whether or not I’m feeling that undeniable ring of truth. I’m reaching for the essence, the knowing, not extraneous details.

I guess I’m saying is I don’t think it matters much, how you envision the structure of the world. It just matters how whatever you settle upon interacts with your own sense of truth. And this concept nestles neatly into our upcoming forecast.

Next Week in Tarot

For this week’s outlook, we got The Lovers! And advice is the High Priestess reversed. These renditions come from the Crystal Visions Tarot deck.

Now, you’ve got to love getting The Lovers as a weekly forecast. Or at least, I do! It promises plenty of opportunity for finding harmony, balance and basically sliding into a comfortable groove.

I say “opportunity” instead of promise, though. I find it important to remember that the Lovers is a card of choices more than anything else. That potential for blissful harmony isn’t automatic. Instead, it’s achieved through a series of choices, exercising personal preferences with integrity and authenticity. Any relationship fits who you really are perfectly only when you’re perfectly true to who you really are.

With advice for the week embodied by the High Priestess reversed,  we’re being encouraged to plug in before we act on our choices. Again, it’s not automatic. There might be a little antsiness to soothe worries, address building tensions or otherwise react to fears. Wait for the sense of everything “clicking into place” before you finalize anything. This doesn’t appear to be a lengthy wait. It’s just a matter of proper timing. Hint: If you’re unsure if the timing is right, it isn’t. When the timing is right (and the High Priestess has made her way to upright), you just know it. You don’t need to know how or why you know it. You’ll just know it.

Are you feeling a “knowing?” Or feeling for it?

I’m open to doing a few more Spirit Message readings, although I don’t think I’m going to offer them as a regular thing. Just a now and then thing. If you would like to get in on it, send $40 via Paypal and feel free to identify a general area of interest if you want (e.g. romance, money, family). These seemed to flow the easiest with a more general focus.

Otherwise, if you want old school Tarot, give me a holler and we can talk.
