06/01/13: Armor On / Emperor

Ah, we’re talking about being in control! You know the concept of “The Man?” The “Establishment?” Well, this is the establishments, Tarot’s Big Daddy, aka the Emperor. He’s maker of rules, seated head of the table, king of the kings. He holds the power of life in his hands (Ankh). Between the Ram-adorned throne and all red red robes, not hard to divine he’s an Aries archetype.

And you notice the armor, right? He doesn’t necessarily go out seeking a fight, but he’s ever-prepared for one.

His secret power is control. And while we usually think of control in terms of other people—as in who controls whom?—effective control always starts the same place: at home!

It would be a good time to take command, be authoritative, and always, always, always be ready to back up your words if need be. I’m not saying you must get into a fight. I’m saying to control YOURSELF first so that you don’t end up in an unnecessary brawl. And either way, keep your armor on so you don’t get dinged by random arrows. Because that guy in the big chair is almost always a target for random arrows, you know?

05/19/13: Who’s really in charge? / Emperor reversed

“One change always leaves the way open for the establishment of others.” Niccolo Machiavelli

The Emperor is  here reversed, and the first thing that comes to mind in such circumstance: who’s really in charge? Is the person seated upon the throne still the one calling the shots? Or does he merely think he is? Because from this vantage point, it appears his control is waning.

This isn’t some out-and-out coup d’état. More like a gradual erosion of authority. If you’re the Emperor, take stock of your power and enforce what you want to keep. And if you’re looking to unseat the Emperor, continue chipping away because that’s how he comes down. The once mighty, perhaps distracted by the grandiosity of their own adornment, will probably never see it coming. Just remember: simply because it’s “always been this way” doesn’t mean it always will be.

Do you see this dynamic around you?

04/01/13: Manage Your Own Ass! / rev Emperor

I’m seeing this Aries-associated card coming in reversed (and blurry, evidently!) as indication the heat is getting turned down in the energetic weather at large. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still humid as Hell out there! But the control-freaking, the “voice of authority booming,” and the itching for a fight kind of vibe should be letting up.

That’s good news, right?

Of all the things we NEED to control, there’s one that’s usually last on the list but more important than the rest of the list combined: ourselves!

I don’t care much how things are usually done. What difference does that make? Nor do I care how the world “should” be. You can get all bent out of shape over “shoulds,” and all that does is waste energy while you’re wanting to bust someone’s ass instead of taking care of business.

I’m seeing some relief from the intensity out there, provided you’re not insistent upon micromanaging the world. Manage your own ass, that’s enough. Let the rest of the world figure out their own Karma.

05/19/12: Take Charge! | The Emperor

“The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual’s own reason and critical analysis.” –Dalai Lama

Take charge. Do it yourself. Don’t be dissuaded. Make your own rules. Take responsibility. Be accountable. Answer to thyself.

It’s not what your mom or friend or husband or Tarot chick tells you. Your life, your decisions, your results. Run your own show. You’ll be better off for it.

Everyday Tarot, 05/24/11: Want vs. Need /Inverted 3 of Wands

daily-tarot-forecast-inverted-three-wands-new-visionsLife has a way of turning things upside down in ways we could never have imagined, left to our own devices. Why, just a month ago, I would never have guessed I’d be over here at A Fool’s Journey, working on making this place a real home for myself and the seekers who drop in, you know? But then, there it is. Things change. It’s just one bullet point on a very long list of bits and pieces of my life that turned out drastically different from how I’d  planned. Welcome to reality, Dixie!

Today’s Tarot Forecast is the inverted Three of Wands, or Lord of Established Strength, associated with the Aries sun. Tarot threes indicate creativity and dynamic changes—the energy that’s been invested here is about to bear fruit. I always think of “waiting for one’s ship to come in” when I see this card, except it’s not a passive thing. He knows the ship is coming because he chartered it himself! Inverted, I’d expect delays or disappointment in the cargo.

I often don’t get what I want. But when I look deep down, I realize I do better than just getting the prize I was aiming for, even when I don’t get what I want. Instead, I may collect knowledge, wisdom and skills from the “failed ventures.” I grow.

If you have done the work to get where you are, and remain open to whatever lessons exist in that creation, you still may not get what you want. Many times, we just don’t. But there’s also a very good possibility you’ll get what you need. Of the two, that’s far more valuable. I’ll take it, gratefully.

Are you getting what you want, or what you need? Or maybe a little of both?
