Hanged Man Rx: Choose Well

Before becoming a card slinger, I used to work in mental health. I’ve done stints at crisis hotlines and women’s shelters as well as working in detox for a few years.

In other words, I’ve spent a good hunk of my professional life talking to people in crisis or supporting those who’ve had some sort of major emotional challenges. The training and experiences from this time has proven to be an unexpected blessing.

One thing I’ve noticed consistently: experiences at the more extreme ends of the spectrum will always change people. That’s a given. But HOW those experiences change people varies tremendously. For some, it shuts them down. For others, it opens their heart. That “how” part is largely a personal choice.

If you are feeling a heavy weight of the collective stress right (as many sensitive folks are), I’d encourage you to consider on how you’d like to wear the experience, longer term. Maybe the personal impact isn’t such that you consider the experience “extreme.” I hope that’s true! But no matter what, there is a collective stress right now and it seems to be impacting almost everyone in one way or another.

There aren’t right or wrong feelings–any emotional reaction can be justified–but there are certainly more or less comfortable feelings. I’m going to lean into thoughts and feelings of kindness, compassion and optimism over the coming weeks. If I’m to be changed by any of the experiences in this weird time we’re living, that’s how I want it to change me.

Next week is the perfect time to start practicing this.

Next Week in the Cards

For outlook next week, we’ve got the Hanged Man reversed. Advice is coming in as The Fool, both from the Crystal Visions Tarot.

The collective vibe next week is characterized by sometimes wavering faith–it’s tidal, comes and goes–and an environment where people feel driven to act without clear indication of what action to take. I wouldn’t need to be psychic to predict unease and restlessness, but I’m predicting it anyway.

The Fool as advice next week is ridiculously appropriate. We’re unchartered territory. It feels risky for good reason. But acknowledging risk is very different from becoming overcome by fear. It always behooves us to do the best we can with whatever we have to work with. And if we can cultivate a sense of adventure along the way? All the better!

The Fool steps into the unknown with a full heart and curious mind, understanding there will be challenges along the path. It’s all part of the process of living and growing and becoming. No one undergoes the Fool’s journey unchanged. So we’re not even looking at that question.

Instead, the question to ask is, “How will it change you?”

Look for opportunities to ground yourself, care for your fellow humans, and find something to be grateful for amidst the stress. There is plenty of both ugly and beauty in the world every single minute of every single day. We choose where to aim our attention. Choose well.

Be safe out there, friends. ♥

High Priestess Reversed: Whoa, Nellie!

You’ve noticed it’s eclipse season, right? The people I’ve been talking to have sure been noticing!

Now, I’m not an astrologer and I don’t play one on the internet. But if your life has been feeling kind of crunchy, feel free to blame the skies. Totally legit here.

And the cards for next week are emphasizing that point, along with some (very helpful) advice about how to manage if we’ve got the good sense to listen.

Next Week in Tarot

For outlook, we have The High Priestess reversed.  Advice this week is The Hanged Man. These cards are from the colorful Crystal Visions Tarot–a lovely gift I received from one of my people recently. Yay!

Now, this combo speaks very clearly. Not sure if you’re going to like what it says, mind you. But I give you what I get here. That’s always the deal. So…

Expect to feel an undeniable urge (or maybe plural, as in “urges”) to DO SOMETHING about a problem, a situation, or condition you’re not pleased about. Moreover, expect people around you may largely be operating under the same general vibe.

This is a “putting out fires” mentality. “We’ve got to do something now…” is more or less how it goes. There is a drive to get conditions in hand somehow, impact the outside world through action.

At the same time, specifically what is best to do here won’t be clear.  That’s because the antsiness is not some kind of sign to take action.

See, our Seer, the lovely Priestess, is still reversed. While there may be some truth in the overall assessment of what’s what, the full picture is not yet revealed. So the drive to act, dramatically and right now, is born from anxiety, not divine inspiration.

Advice is also clear when the Hanged Man is on deck. Wait! Have faith. Visualize a positive outcome. Pray if you’re so inclined, or feel free to do a little magic work for if that’s your thing.

Just whatever you do, don’t try to write the script of exactly how it’s all resolved. Don’t try to force anything, even through indirect means like prayer or magic, because control-freaking this will make a bigger mess. Instead, call upon some faith in the larger Universe because that’s what the Hanged Man is all about.

The vibe overall feels edgy and I’m sorry. That’s not fun. But the answer to softening any edge isn’t external. Relief comes via reigning in your thinking.

Soothe yourself. Seek peace and reach for your center. Let go of what you cannot control–almost everything, if we’re being honest–and allow yourself to manage what you can control: where you focus attention.

Step back, breathe, and stabilize your own damn self. The rest works itself out. This is the path.

Take care out there!

Don’t Drown. Surf! Weekly Tarot, April 17 – 23, 2017

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, or at least, it feels that way to me. Plenty of it, I don’t feel super warm and fuzzy over. Decisions that are not mine. Situations that may impact me, directly or indirectly, or they may not–beyond the fact that I’m seeing it all and having FEELINGS about it.

But either way, I do know what my own choice is about. HOW I want to live. WHO I want to be. WHAT I want to direct my own, precious attention toward.

That’s the kind of mood I’m feeling for next week. Like, there’s plenty of mess within your field of vision–mess that you have FEELINGS about–and most of that mess, you don’t have much say in. Sort of akin to parenting. Ha!

Look for guiding lights–thoughts and perspective from traditions that speak to you and give you comfort. Worry less about what other people are “getting” and just keep your corner of the world as tidy as possible.

Gonna do a little Tarot for you. The week of April 17 – 23rd, 2017. Hang on.

Hey, this is Dixie from afoolsjourney.com. Here with your weekly Tarot forecast. I have got the Gilded Tarot here this week. And just gonna lay a few cards, down and dirty. And see what we got.

Oh, good lord! I’ve got Death again. Which, I just had last week. Got the Hanged Man, which may have had for the last week one. I used the Osho Zen last week, and I don’t always translate that immediately in my head.

I don’t want to stop and think on video. ‘Cause it’s an ugly enough process when I’m doing it in real life. Okay. Starting off the week, where we’re at, let’s take a look here. Death reversed, five of pentacles, and page of cups. Mmmmmmm. Reversed.

I don’t want to say this is Chicken Little and the sky is falling, because I don’t think it’s quite that bad. But there’s a sense of somberness, and I’m seeing like, a funeral procession, as far as how people are reacting in general. You know, I’m gonna say news, but it’s not necessarily an issue of world wide news, although, that’s entirely, way too entirely possible, but what they’re hearing, what they’re doing in their personal life, a lot of reacting to the emotional message instead of necessarily reacting to the facts. Which, actually people do quite a bit but they don’t always recognize it.

Starting from that place, though, there’s an idea, “Who’s learned from this? Have we learned from this? We might not have learned from this.”  There’s kind of a feeling of being on the outside looking in, there’s nothing that can be done, yada, yada, yada.

So when you have that kind of thing going on, one option that you have is kind of looking to tradition and seeing what’s usually done here and why. Or looking to, you know what? I usually don’t recommend that people look to their spiritual authorities or whatever. But I don’t want to say that this is a person so much as look for inspiration in spiritual texts or in quotes or poetry or whatever it is that usually inspires you. Okay, ’cause there’s comfort in that. And the outcome of all of this, what your goal is, okay, what you can expect, from the week, is to exercise a little bit of faith.

Also since we did end up on the hanged man, I would heartily suggest that you don’t force anything. We’ve got a smack ton of planets in retrograde at the moment and there will be no forcing anything. It’s like fighting water, if somebody’s like, going under water. And the harder you fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, the more you go down.

Okay? So that’s…be aware. Call on your faith. It really is okay. It will continue to be okay. However, life is gonna feel slow as mud, so I don’t know what to tell ya’ other than cope, cope. You’re good at that. You’re good at that.

Now let me pull a card for overview/advice. To see if we have any special…[laughs]. Okay. We’ve got, got the Emperor reversed!

And the Emperor reversed says, Don’t try to control-freak it or you’ll be sorry! Because you’ll have a mini revolt on your hands!

So, really the best you can do to take care of yourself and stay in the flow and let go of the need to control, because kind of central to the energy this week as far as what I’m seeing is a feeling of being on the outside looking in, being left out in the cold, and there’s nothing you can do, aaaggghhhh. And [shug], you know, you can feel that way or you can feel like I have faith in the Universe, Universal forces, and God, spirit, guides, you know, the law of attraction, whatever it is that you believe in, assuming you believe in something. And I am assuming that because you probably wouldn’t be watching me if you didn’t. But have faith in whatever it is to take care of things. Your job is to take care of yourself, to take care of your mood, your state of mind, your thoughts, and do the bast you can with that.

So that’s what I got for you for the coming week. I hope it is helpful. Go out there, stay safe, be happy, do what you can and what you can’t? Let go! Okay? Ahhhhh.
Peace out from Dixie. Bye-bye.

Benefit of the Doubt: Tarot Forecast, Dec 12 – 18, 2016

My kids give me shit about my age sometimes, but truth is I don’t really care how old I am. Not that I’m going to admit that. I will tell them to shut up anyway. But in truth, I like where I am, and look to always like where I am.

Isn’t that the mark of a happy person?

Being at peace with wherever you are. Liking yourself. Knowing your life is your own and it’s worked from the inside-out. How you focus determines your experience.

Energetic weather in the wild is kinda wonky right now. At least, the way I’m feeling it. Intense, fast-moving. Ups are way high and the lows are way low and they both are shifting poles pretty rapidly. So it’s good to have some coping skills on hand.

Finding and holding your center will do you a world of good under these conditions (or any, really). What we’re shooting for here is an inner knowing that it’s okay, a sense of realizing who you are and who you want to be and that nothing can rock your peace. Your calm. Your happiness and sense of who you are.

Easier said than done? Sometimes. But it becomes easier and easier to maintain this stance, the more you practice it.

Practice when it’s easy and when conditions become less than optimal, it will be your default setting. Look for ways to feel good, as much as you can. Appreciate whatever you can. Live as happy as you can. And don’t bother with what anybody else is living. You cannot vibrate for another and you cannot force them to your perspective.

But you can look to keep your perspective as pliable and possible. You can do your best to make peace with your now, being true to who you really are. You can stay centered in your respect for yourself. Everything else will form around that core if you keep steady to that energy.

There’s a joke, where I live. “Don’t like the weather in Kansas? Wait five minutes, it will change.”

I didn’t say it was a funny joke.

But next week? It is a lot like that.

The good news in that is that whatever is utterly under your skin on one day? Probably be a non-issue within 24 hours. It’s a quick-change week, so don’t get too wrapped up in any sort of drama because it will be short-lived. That’s something to work with, huh? So let’s hit the day-by-day play-by-play.

Monday, Death: Might be a tough day. Sorry! Could even be an ugly or upsetting event in the news. In a short-term forecast, the “weightier” cards like Death don’t have the same implications as other, longer term readings, though, so no need to get overly wrought up. But do understand the day may have some heavy or difficult energy, nonetheless. It is what it is, but don’t worry about it much because why? Look at tomorrow.

Tuesday, The Sun: Pretty much the exact opposite emotional tone from yesterday. Yay! It’s a great time for fun activities. Look for things to appreciate and feel joyful, and make the most of these kind of days when you get them. Enjoy! Because that’s why we’re here.

Wednesday, Knight of Wands rx: Progress is happening, even if you feel impatient about it. I’m seeing someone tap, tap, tapping their foot. But do know we’re moving forward and call upon your patience mojo. It’s totally warranted.

Thursday, Queen of Wands: Perfect follow-up to yesterday. See? Here’s evidence of the progress we’re making. Enjoy the progress. It’s a good creative day, with lots of room for joy.

Friday, High Priestess: Action? Not so much. Turn inward, get grounded and have quiet, reflective time. Meditation is super-charged. Intuition is right on. Passive, receptive trust in your knowing. And know everything is okay.

Saturday, Hanged Man rx: Antsy feeling, like a drive to do something, do something, do something. The picture folks have conjured is not entirely clear. Postpone action a bit and work on your faith. Get your mindset CLEAR, before you take action. If you don’t have the faith in place, don’t make the phone call, write the letter or whatever. Faith comes first and don’t move on anythign until you got it.

Sunday, Eight of Cups rx: Want to toss up your hands to walk away? You’re not quite ready. The situation isn’t there, all the facts are not out, etc. Just trust! Keep working on the faith. We’re getting there…

Overview/Advice, Two of Wands: Pointing towards a couple of things. Standing your ground, being firm and convinced in what’s right for you and settling in for that. Not activism or convincing others, but for YOU. The second element that’s highlighted here is paitence. It’s a longer term energy, the long game for this coming week. There are ups and down, but breathe deeply, take your time, and let it unfold at it’s own pace. MAKE PEACE with where you are. Rushing won’t get you away from what you’re unhappy with…get where you want emotionally first, and the outer circumstances morph accordingly.

Affirmation: “I am developing the skill to direct my thoughts.” You may not realize how much impact this has. We’re not truly responding to what’s happening outside ourselves. It’s what’s happening in our heads! You can have the exact same experience, but whether it’s Heaven or Hell is determined by what you’re thinking about it.

Any new circumstance you’re exploring, do an emotional temperature check. See how you’re feeling about it. If you’re feeling uneasy, uncomfortable for any reason, look to shift your thoughts. If you do this early on before you get a lot of momentum, it’s much easier to shift. If you can shift up the emotional tone of the situation, you completely shift your experience. This changes the outcome. A lot of what is good or bad in your experience, as in pretty much ALL of it, is a function of how you think about it, which determines how you feel about it. This week, practice checking in on your feelings and ask, “Is there a way I could think about this that would feel a little better?” Don’t worry if that something you could think would be considered “true” as some kind of objective reality. Just look at ways to frame it to feel better and choose that.

[bctt tweet=”The benefit of a doubt is really a gift for yourself. #OnMyRadar” via=”no”]

We talk about giving someone else the “benefit of the doubt” as if it’s really about the other person, a gift of some sort. It’s not. But it’s definitely a gift. See, regardless of the situation and regardless of how convinced you are that it’s likely one way or another, you can still assume it’s coming from a malicious, ugly place (and maybe it is), or you can assume no ill-intention as default (and maybe that’s true, too). Even if it’s coming from an ugly place, getting upset about it doesn’t help you and your experience. If you assume even the ugly is not about you because it never is–even if the other person thinks it is, it’s still about how they look at the world–then you’ll have a much happier life.

Personally? I think that’s a very awesome gift!

Group Think: Weekly Tarot, Feb 1 – 7, 2016

This week’s forecast: A lot of emphasis on how we interact with others, both when things are going well and…well, when they are not going so well. Also some advice on when to take action on important projects.

Balance called for in deciding when to act in general this coming week – enough info is required to make a reasonable judgement, but not so much as to invite analysis paralysis.

Flavors of Love (for Heart-Day Haters) / Hanged Man, 2 Pentacles Rx, Knight of Cups

Hanged Man 2 Pentacles Knight Cups
I wanted to give you all something special in the dailies for Valentine’s Day—and please hear me out if you find it a wretched holiday. I get it. People hate a reminder, of what it feels like they do not have. So I took that into account when pulling cards.

This mini-spread-on-the-spot is (left to right), the love we have, the love we want, and how to get it.

Hanged Man, as the love we have: Each of us no doubt has some “invisible love” in our daily lives. This is affection we don’t have to seek or to earn. We have family, we have friends, we have kitty cats or dogs or whomever, the souls who show up time and time again somewhere or other in our lives and act in a loving way. We have the universal, spiritual love of our fellow human beings, or the divine if your belief system is so inclined to acknowledge such a current. This is the love we may not notice, tears of strangers upon hearing of another’s pain. We may discount this type as meaningless since it isn’t what we’re looking for. But think of how much the world would suck if this love didn’t exist! And remember not only how much of this you have, but how much you give. It’s worthwhile. Acknowledging it directly amps up the vibration of love in your life overall, makes the world a better place and certainly cannot do anything but good. You can easily add self-love into this category.

Don’t you feel just a little better already?

Reversed Two of Pentacles, as the love we want: We don’t want to have to worry…no hiding parts of the self. We look for comfort that we are “okay” on the days we feel anything but. We look into another’s eyes for confirmation of our worth when we are not so convinced ourselves. We want promises and guarantees and someone with whom to share our load. We want to exhale! The trick about this love it cannot ever be complete. We can get genuine promises, but there are never valid guarantees between mortals. People can die without our permission. We may find those who accept and value us as we are, who may share our load, but they cannot carry the entirety of our self-esteem. They can only support us as we seek to more fully treasure ourselves. Self-worth is an inside job.

It’s true, damnit!

Knight of Cups, as how to get it: Putting aside the imagery of this young Casanova wannabe, he’s onto something. The Knight of Cups drinks fully and completely of every moment. He allows himself (and okay, his date) to become vulnerable in doing so. To open yourself up to love, you have to put yourself at risk for pain! Communicating affection opens up the possibility of rejection. Allowing someone in means you could hurt–perhaps a lot–when they are no longer there. It’s the great paradox of the heart: you cannot have love if you’re not willing to risk losing it. The fact that it’s something given freely (and with risk), lasting however long it does, is part of what makes it so incredibly precious.

FEEL the love in your life that you don’t have to seek, and give of that brand of love freely. Manage your own self-image, but allow those willing to support you in seeing your true value to do so. But no matter what, absolutely, positively allow yourself the risk to feel. Without that, you miss not only the hardest, but also the most rewarding part of life. Isn’t feeling what being human is?

I love you guys! ♥
