Not-So-Merry: Christmas Grief

All those traditional things that make Christmas special–home, health, and family–can be the very same reminders that bring so much pain.

Christmas grief visits when what’s missing is much more glaring that what’s there.

I cannot wish “Merry Christmas” to someone for whom I know, it will feel anything but “merry.” I cannot bring myself to brightly say, “Happy New Year!” to someone who is wondering how the Hell they’re going to get through the year at all.

Happiness isn’t much of an option in some cases. “Functioning” is a more realistic wish.

“Wishing you a functional new year” isn’t exactly poetic now, is it?

So for those who are feeling that aching lack….I do have some holiday wishes for you.

Love

May you give and receive enough LOVE to sweeten, if even the tiniest bit, the bitterness life may have visited upon you.

Support

In whatever form it takes, may you receive and feel the SUPPORT to help you through the days and nights, now and to come.

Hope

May you catch glimmers of HOPE that every day will not hurt as much as today does.

Fortitude

May you find the FORTITUDE to get up each day, to take care of yourselves, and to continue through whatever pain you carry, as best you can.

Pain changes us. It can make us cold and emotionally shut down, or it can blast our hearts wide open.

We all have loss. We all bleed. It’s not a choice.

[bctt tweet=”Be kind to everyone you meet. You never know what pain they carry in their hearts.”]

How we go about living in light of the pain? How we honor ourselves, our loved ones and what we stand for? That’s a choice.

And from those I’ve watched do just this, I’ve learned SO MUCH grace. It’s beyond humbling. Thank you for that.

And if you have special people in your life? Consider this a reminder to let them know how much you appreciate them. Because nothing is permanent.

Whatever your situation this year, and whether or not Christmas Grief is a part of it…well…much love to you.

Holiday Tarot Special – 2016 Look-Ahead Zodiac Readings

“Tarot readings! Can we get Tarot readings?”

2016 Holiday Tarot Special

Zodiac Spread has 1 card for each of the 12 astrological houses plus an overview card.

Being a Tarot-reading mom, sometimes at holiday gatherings, I become the entertainment for my kids.

This Thanksgiving, they weren’t aware of the Saturn-Neptune square…making the perfect astrology for delusional (Neptune) bubbles to be popped (Saturn). Oops. But they were good sports nonetheless and even expressed interest in Christmas year-ahead Tarot readings.

“They’ve been…very accurate,” said one.

“You were going to say surprisingly!” I (accurately) accused.

“I caught myself,” she said, laughing. “You’ve predicted a lot that came true.”

“That’s kinda the point.” Tarot readings and all…

I do really enjoy the Zodiac Year-Ahead spreads. As rewarding as it can be to help folks through crisis, sometimes it’s just fun to sit down and do some old-fashioned fortune telling!

It’s been a few years since I’ve done a holiday Tarot special, which usually means doing a bunch of these readings over the holidays–and besides being fun to do, they allow me to peek at major themes in the collective for the year ahead.

Holiday Tarot SpecialSo I thought, “It’s time!” I plan on offering these at a discount, at least through the New Year. There may be a slightly longer-than-normal turn around time for these readings. So thanks for your patience!

Oh yeah: I absolutely will use a traditional deck, not a specialty deck, unless you request one of the decks you’ve seen on this website. Just add it to the notes if you have a special deck in mind and I’ll be happy to oblige.

And here’s hoping you have a solid, love-filled holiday.

Peace Out.

Dix

Photoshopped Mother’s Day

(c) Michelle Dennis 2008

(c) Michelle Dennis 2008

For some, Mother’s Day is not a day of  joy. It can be a time of sadness and acknowledging loss–missing a mother passed on or lamenting Mother’s flaws–she who may not have been as kind, loving, or sane as traditional maternal veneration would dictate. Some will mourn separations or replay “what if” scenarios ad infinitum. This tends to leave people hurt and feeling left out while others wax poetic on the beauty of their own mother-child relationships.

First of all, the snapshot of motherhood you see on a day like today is heavily Photoshopped. People cherry-pick recollections to support a specific premise. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you don’t want to be comparing your worst memories to heavily edited highlight reels. It cannot measure up.

Not saying some don’t have (or are) great moms! Not saying sometimes exceptionally human moms don’t have their worthwhile qualities, worthy of appreciation. Just realize sometimes this day is ruled by an abundance of rose colored glasses, so don’t let that glorious glow of maternal bliss blind you to the truth. Not “everybody else” had (or is) the world’s greatest mom, even if it feels that way.

I prefer to see Mother’s Day differently. I want to focus on the energy, the nature of what is being celebrated as opposed to the details. While some of us will not have a birth mother standing in the wings applauding our every achievement, I’d wager not a person on the face of the planet is untouched by the energy, the concepts themselves.

The ideal of motherhood is about creating, nurturing and supporting. It’s about giving birth and bringing  “baby” to adulthood with loving care. The concept of motherhood is revered precisely for an abundance of committed, creative and loving energy. It’s about what “mama” means collectively, not who your mama was personally.

Women give birth to children. But anyone can give birth to ideas. We can love and nurture ourselves, our family, our friends, our pets, strangers or even endeavors. We can appreciate those who love, support and encourage us through life’s ups and downs. THAT energy is what is so precious and worthy of celebration, regardless of the source.

Today, I am feeling grateful for the love and emotional support I’ve been blessed with, regardless of the source. Today, I’m hoping to share love and emotional support with my loved ones. Today, I focus on the gifts from my relationships with my own mother and children have given me, without worry over shortcomings. Today, I care for and nurture myself because I know that is a beautiful and worthwhile endeavor.

Today, I’m having a “Happy Mother’s Day.” No Photoshop required.

How about you?

New Year Zodiac Forecast Spread for 2014

Zodiac 2014

Zodiac Look-Ahead for the Collective

Happy New Year! I like to do something special for the New Year. Since I’ve done so many Zodiac spreads and already did the year-ahead  video, I thought, “Well, why not a New Year’s spread!?”

I pulled out the Housewives deck for job, figuring even if things aren’t pretty, at least the ladies will keep us entertained. This spread pulls one card for each house of the Zodiac and an overview for the year card. Refer to one of my astrology cheat-sheets if you need a reminder on what’s what.

First thing that is notable is lots of inverted cards. Eight of thirteen I pulled, so over 60% reversed. Only one Cups card—definitely not a squishy year! And only a couple Pentacles, both inverted. We’ve got a lot of Wands and Swords instead. To me, this looks like a lot of effort required for real-world manifestations. I’m not saying the work doesn’t do any good. It certainly might be invaluable in the bigger picture. But much of what you accomplish is not going to be the kind of thing you can sit across from in your living room and say, “I did that.”

Houses 1 - 3

Houses 1 – 3

1st House: Mixed drink goggles! I like this one. It’s like there’s a certain art and elegance surrounding interpersonal interactions in 2014. Putting your best foot forward can be the source of much satisfaction. I would also suggest you act like whom you want to become. Not in a creepy-stalker way or a fake-persona way, but more using the year as an opportunity to self-define, essentially. There’s some magic available there to those who make use of it. Ten of Cups

2nd House: Almost but not quite right. This looks like a strong tendency to self-criticize and potential for missing details regarding financial matters. Reversed Knight of Pentacles can border on OCD an be rather anxious. Prioritize in conjunction with list-making are good ways to save the day when this guy is out of whack. Ranking what you value most and acting consistently in keeping with those rankings helps a lot. Consider making a mission statement to follow for the year. (That New Moon in Capricorn would be an excellent time to commit to it—hint, hint!) Reversed Knight of Pentacles

3rd House: “Is this conversation done yet?” It’s a lot of work to get your message across this year, and requires great care in not being misunderstood. Sorry, but the burden for being understood remains squarely with the communicator. So make sure whatever points you insist on making are worth the trouble. Ten of Wands

Houses 4 - 6

Houses 4 – 6

4th House: Forget the Alamo! Flexibility is in order, because digging your heels in at home probably won’t net you prizes. Don’t think sit-in. Think compromise, if you can bring yourself to do so. You’ve got much better odds that way. Reversed Nine of Wands

5th House: Make art for art’s sake. It’s a good year for creative endeavors of all kinds. Emphasis is on play and what the doing itself gives you, more than what you learn from the endeavor. You may learn in the process, but it cannot be the point. If you’re responsible for children, practice regular fun time without specific objectives. Reversed Nine of Pentacles

6th House:  Making nice, kind of. Submerged tensions and stressors wear down the immune system. First, check to see if it really matters (2nd house). Then, communicate it explicitly (3rd house). Finally, don’t be stubborn for stubborn’s sake (4th house). It may not be as big of a deal as it seemed at first, approached this way. Reversed Five of Wands

Houses 7 - 9

Houses 7 – 9

7th House: Step carefully. You can get through what you need to get through, to the people you need to get through to, but it requires effort to cross the divide (3rd house). Otherwise, you could slip. Once again, make sure you know what’s really important (2nd house) and what’s not. On the plus side, the gains made here are important and useful! Six of Swords

8th House: Death and taxes visit everyone and there’s nothing to be done to stop it. No point in worrying over it, huh? I know you will anyway, but it’s not because I didn’t warn you. Reversed Nine of Swords

9th House: Forgotten what that floor looked like? When you clean up your thinking and scrub off your spiritual philosophy, it doesn’t look the way you remembered it. Expanding your horizons may leave you lost in a strange land. “This is neither good nor bad,: declares the Zen Housewife. “Only different.” Reversed Three of Wands

Houses 10 - 12

Houses 10- 12

10th House: Bewitching reputation? It totally depends on who you’re asking. How the world views you is in great flux in 2014. Eight of Wands

11th House: Be careful of what you wish for…well, sort of. You won’t get what you expected, but it could make you happy anway. However, that’s entirely up to you. The Sun Reversed

12th House:  Pulling threads? So much of what’s going on in all the other houses find their way here, each a little thread. How you address the rest of your life in 2014 can have significant psychological and spiritual impact. In other words, the battles you fight at home, at work, with the siblings or kids or within your self? They matter. How they matter largely depends on how much integrity and thought you put into them during the fighting. Five of Swords

Knight of Wands Reversed

Overview for 2014

Overview: Last time I saw this little guy, I think I told you not to go poking bears. That’s still sound advice. The overall sense I have for 2014 is that a lot of the progress we make isn’t going to be outwardly visible. Like duck paddling, much of the work happens beneath the surface and outwardly, it doesn’t seem to be moving very fast. Themes regarding how we interact with other people, what matters and what does not, and self-defining are prominent. We could groan about the stuff that doesn’t look like fun, but honestly even though some of this most definitely doesn’t look like fun, it also has a feeling of being very important to me. And I’m not one to disregard those feelings, you know. Knight of Wands Reversed

Zodiac 2014 Look-Ahead Readings

zodiac-tarot-spreadGood news (I hope!)–I am doing the Zodiac Look-Ahead readings again this year. Folks who subscribe to my newsletter or check the specials page know this, but for the rest of you, I’m announcing it!

For these readings, I pull one card for each house of the zodiac, covering pretty much the whole spectrum of your life. No questions, just the cards talking. If you are not a student of astrology and could use a refresher, check out the house cheat-sheets here and here

holiday-specialsI very much enjoy doing this spread, but between my schedule right now and a decision to keep the price very modest for the amount energy they require, I just cannot commit to offering them throughout January like last year. I’ll just have to see how it goes. So consider my holiday special to be just for the holidays. Which are here already, damn it!

In other words, if you would like one of these readings, please don’t delay too long. Expect a slightly longer wait than usual for my email readings. But I hope to make it worth the wait!

And thanks for giving me the opportunity to work with you. I love you guys!

How are your Holidays going?

For the Heart Day VD Haters

Okay. So you hate Valentine’s Day. I get it. Maybe it reminds you of what you don’t have. It reminds you of what you want. And you know…it highlights the missing.

But you know what? That’s a good thing. That’s useful information.

That tug, that zap, that emotional twang that shows up is indication, something in your life is out of alignment.

It’s an oppotunity to get it in alignment.

No, you don’t control who shows up in your life and when. But you do control what your energy feels like…what it’s like to BE you.

Which, in turn, puts you in sync with other people who are at a similar place, energetically.

Happy, high energy people with lots of contentment and loving energy in their lives (expressed in a myriad of ways, not all of them necessitating a Victoria’s Secret credit line), these are the people who are attracted to others like them. And in the meantime, you are naturally going to lead a better life. When you keep your thoughts healthy, clear, when you take good care of your body, when you feed your mind a stream of uplifting and inspirational energy, it keeps you in good touch with your spirit. It makes you shine. Your light comes out and guess what: it attracts! That light not only attracts, but it attracts what’s at the same level as you. You get back exactly what you are putting out.

Don’t you see, it’s a win-win opportunity? People makes shifts. You make shifts. As your energy shifts, the people that come and go in your life with line up with where your energy is. It all syncs up.

You want more, better quality relationships in your life? Then develop a more engaging relationship with yourself.

By not being with the wrong person, you open the door for someone who is a good fit.

Every time you feel disjointedness  with something in your life, consider it gift. It’s a neon sign, lighting up what needs to be tweaked. It’s a big, red blinking arrow, saying, “Look here!”

On the other hand, if you just hate all the chocolate and sap factor, there ain’t much I can do.

You a VD hater?
