Everyday Tarot, 05/07/011: Past Mother’s Day Mourning / Inverted Five of Cups

[This is from Mother’s Day, 2011. I ran across it tonight, and figured maybe somebody needed to hear it. ♥ ~Dix]

It’s almost Mother’s Day. And while countless images of  impeccable Stepford-style family bliss march through our collective consciousness courtesy marketing, it’s enough to make anybody feel inadequate. For too many, Mother’s Day is just another reminder of something they don’t have.

Today’s Tarot is the Five of Cups, inverted. Known as “The Lord of Loss in Pleasure,” this card is associated with Mars in Scorpio. Like all Tarot fives, there’s disruption and conflicted feelings. Quite simply, this is a card of mourning losses. Inverted, expect the mourning to be  cushioned, limited or short-lived.

Black Cats and the Supernatural

Jewels the Tarot Kitty

Jewels the Tarot Kitty assists.

One of my Tarot people asked me about Black cats and talking to Spirit...seems she has a new friend. Ha! :cat:

I was investigating her question, and ran into this fascinating blog from a medium who talks about why some spirits like to hang around cats. Er, uh…I got sidetracked for a few hours over there, so you’ve been forewarned.

Animals’ physical senses have greater range, more frequencies to detect energy shifts, and their brains are not full of ego or denials! They live immersed in emotional response and instinct. That’s how a dog can judge character or a cat living in a nursing home can predict death. Hence, animals would seem perfect channels for spirit connection.

Black cats especially have long been associated with the supernatural. They were sometimes honored and sometimes feared (or killed),  but frequently judged as especially connected. In some cultures, black cats were considered reincarnations of children who’d passed. In other times and places, just having a black cat would have been enough to get a person executed for witchcraft.

Regardless of how it started (and truth is an option), such a long association may tend to build a type of affinity between black cats and spirit world, a predisposition energetically shaped via expectation and belief  spanning centuries.

And of course, black is associated with night, mystery, and the unknown. That’s where the human world and the spirit world meet, y’know. In ancient Celtic legend, cats were guardians to the Underworld or Otherworld.

Living very close to their hearts, animals are going to be tune. They are part of the ebbs and flows of the natural world, a world crackling with spiritual energy. As such, I think cats in general and black cats in particular would make excellent intermediates with spirit.

Cats companions of mine who’ve passed do come to visit me. I see them out of the corner of my eye, feel them walking on the bed to snuggle up sometimes at night, making their presence felt in various ways.  These visits are common enough I no longer question them.

I also consider my little black kitty, Jewels, to be my familiar. I don’t know if she’s been with me in other lives or not, but she obviously loves me and tries to look after me in this life. And as I’ve said before, she is unquestionably psychic. She’s laying behind,  on the back of the chair I’m sitting in, as I write this.

Do you believe black cats have a special connection to the spirit world?

Tarot Kitty Helpers

Smokey, aka Buddha-Cat

This is Smokey, during a recently Everyday Tarot draw. She thought she’d jump in the middle of what I was doing to help. It’s exactly as much help as it looks like it would be.

We sometimes call her Buddha cat, both for her Buddha belly and ironically, since her temperament is known to be..uh, not very Zen. She doesn’t join me for many readings because she prefers not to be shut in the room.

That is Jewels, keeping me company during a reading. She’s more than happy to be in the room while I read–she sometimes gets mad if I don’t let her in and cries incessantly outside the door, as some of my clients can no doubt attest. Isn’t she adorable?

They do remind me to be more Zen. No creature on Earth seems to know more about living in the moment than a cat. Or maybe it’s just my cats. I don’t know.

Jewels naps to Tarot readings.

Do your little furry friends help you, too?

Jewels the Psychic Cat!

Jewels the Tarot Kitty!

Jewels understands me better than many people.

I like saying I was a cat in a former life. When I first started saying this, it was mostly just my Leo rising, joking. But after talking for years to Jewels, I’m not kidding quite so much anymore.

When I had an intuitive portrait done at a psychic fair, the first thing out of the artist’s mouth was, “You’re surrounded by cats!” I had to laugh–I had five of ’em at the time! There’s no denying my affinity with felines. And it’s easy to see with Jewels, since we’re close.

I’ve long said this kitty is psychic. It’s the most reasonable explanation. She KNOWS when I’m having a bad day and gives me extra attention, even in uncharacteristic ways. She’s incredibly smart. She hides when something she doesn’t like is coming up (without any indication of what’s coming) and is exceptionally vocal, carrying on full conversations with me.

Technically, I (generally) speak in English and she responds in Cat. But we do understand each other perfectly. I’m taking this as evidence!

Have you ever known a psychic animal?
