04/09/12: Two sides of the story | Two of Wands

Today’s Tarot is the Two of Wands (Mars in Aries). As you might expect from such a Mars-y card, there’s probably has been something of a standoff. Tarot twos speak to polarities, after all.

This fellow obviously feels like he’s achieved his aim. But it’s instructive to note he’s flanked on each side by wands. There are TWO sides to this story and he’s not dismissed one or the other.

You conquer (Mars) via facing up…here, it’s to yourself (Aries). Acknowledge mixed blessings, ambiguity, mistakes, self-defeating behavior or what have you. By taking it all into account, you can incorporate the whole. You’re not missing the point. You’re using the yin and yang, the light and the dark, the part and the whole. It’s all there and by working both, you get further than looking exclusively at one or the other.

Make peace with your mixed feelings. Then, they don’t weaken you by dissipating your energy unconsciously. Keep it in front of you and stay with it so you don’t lose sight of what you’re integrating.

Do you have some mixed feelings to make peace with?

08/26/11: Make a Move, Already! | Reversed Two of Wands

two-wands-reversedI’ve been known to stress over insignificant choices. Or maybe “known” isn’t the right word. I try to keep some of my oddness under the radar, thank you very much! But I’m self-aware enough to acknowledge nuttiness potential, even if I don’t want to parade it around the room.

Today’s Tarot is the reversed Two of Wands or Lord of Dominion, associated with Mars in Aries. Tarot twos denote choice. Will our happy housewife mop or sweep? She hasn’t the time to do both before company arrives! She’s not any closer to getting either done while she dallies around trying to decide, though.

I usually see the Two of Wands as indicative of  pressure to decide, as opposed to the Two of Swords, which is more about carefully and rationally weighing options. With the Two of Wands, there’s more of a push, a fiery drive to act along the lines of the Mars in Aries. Whether from within or without, these choices are vying for attention, competing. Inverted, we may be fearful to move or waiting for something else to make the choice for us.

Fear of making a poor decision can translate into avoiding action entirely. This is even less satisfying than making a less-than-perfect call. It’s true, there are times it’s best to wait, letting signs emerge and clarify. But not now. Here,  any constructive steps start the flow and ease the pressure. Getting closer will help, so lay off the second-guessing.

The reversed Two of Wands suggests action—decide what feels best to you, and move on it. Be prepared to adjust as you go, for sure, because each choice carries advantages and disadvantages. But do the best you can with the information you have; don’t let fear keep you from getting that floor in shape. You’ll be happier once you’ve made progress, and there’s a good chance you’ll learn something useful from the process.

08/10/11: Reversed Two of Wands | Whose choice is it?

“In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don’t try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.” –Lao Tzu

Today’s Tarot forecast is the reversed Two of Wands or Lord of Dominion, associated with Mars in Aries.  Whereas the traditional RWS shows a single man between two wands (worlds?), the Morgan-Greer (and the Transparent Tarot version we saw recently) indicate two people—with objectives pretty evenly matched judging by stance, although the wealthy fellow holding the globe probably has the upper hand here. Should he use it?

As Tarot Twos suggest duality, polarity or mixed feelings, I often find two appearing in the context of a choice to be made. Reversed, I’d expect it’s not a choice you can make alone or for another. While you can use your vision and to some extent, your power and position to advocate, you’re best off not trying to force your will. Mars in Aries has the potential to be a bit overbearing that way.

So maybe it’s time to tell ourselves, “It’s not my choice, my life or my problem.” Sure, other people’s lives impact us. We are social creatures who live and love and want good for those we care about. But sometimes, the “good” is respecting their right to live their own lives and learn their own lessons. Your right is  The control we want to exercise now is self-control.

Sure, you can make your case. Just know it’s not the only case to be made. If you strong-arm you preferred implementation, there’s liable to be blowback. Don’t be surprised. You’d likely have the same reaction, if someone were trying to force you onto a different route.

The inverted Two of Wands reminds me of what’s mine  I have the responsibility to live my own life the best I can, which implies leaving others to live theirs as well. My real choice is in whom and what I invite into my realm of experience.

Everyday Tarot, 06/25/11: Transcending Polarities

daily-tarot-forecast-transparentI wanted something fresh, so I reached for the Transparent Tarot. Superimposing the images triggers entirely different stories than you’d get looking at each card in isolation. It’s like visual poetry, sure to stir something up! And stir it did.

Today’s Tarot forecast is a three card spread—er, stack.

  • The Moon or “Ruler of Flux and Reflux,” associated with Pisces (I know, it’s counter-intuitive. Think in terms of meaning and don’t gripe to me about it.)
  • The World or “The Great One of the Night of Time,” associated with Saturn
  • Two of Wands or “Lord of Dominion,” associated with Mars in Aries

Two Major Arcana—it’s a deep, what we’re looking at. The two figures present their wands to each other, each with like force and conviction. It’s a polarity.

See how this Moon has her physical eyes closed, but her Third Eye open? Framed by the World energy—integrated, confident of her own integrity—she can afford to be generous. She understands on a deep level how differences in perspective are part of the natural order, trusting each to travel their own sacred path in their own time and way, without getting caught up in the details. Details aren’t necessary to live well here.

So the stuff that gets under my skin? The people, places and things that so often frustrate me? How about I let go of it, look higher, seek a more complete picture where everyone is exactly where they’re supposed to be, doing whatever it is they need to do? That doesn’t mean I don’t need to protect myself at times. But those times are relatively few and far between.

Today, I’m looking to be respectful of everyone I meet, whether they vibrate very much like me or very much apart. I’m going to understand, on a soul level, each of us is here, walking our own path, and that is a sacred and individual (Fool’s) journey; it’s not necessary for me to understand others’ paths; my job is to walk my own as well as I can. For everyone else, send as much love as possible when we pass.

Everyday Tarot, 05/19/11: Cure for Greener Grass / Inverted Two of Wands

daily-tarot-forecast-two-wands-housewivesI used to annoy my kids to no end, promising them their childhood was a wonderful, magical time in their lives they should savor instead of wishing away. To them, the absolute freedom of being grown up, the right to pick dinners and bedtimes and television shows to watch represented absolute Nirvana. Turning 18 was the promised land and nothing anybody said was going to convince them adulthood was anything short of moonbeams and fairy dust that all goodness is crafted from. No matter how many times I did my “with privilege comes responsibility” spiel, it just didn’t make a dent.

Until they grew up and moved out, that is.

wands02sToday’s Tarot Forecast is the inverted Two of Wands or  “Lord of Dominion,” associated with Mars in Aries. As one of the Tarot Twos, there is emphasis on duality. You’ll often see this card show up when there are mixed feelings over an accomplishment, as Tarot Twos always highlight duality. Generally, it does speak to a realm you have some mastery over and there’s indication of success overall, but not a sense of being done yet. You’re a great housekeeper, but maybe you don’t know which mess it’s your job to clean up! Inverted, maybe you’d be better off dropping them all.

grass greener fence iStock_000011126842Small-resized-600When you see the inverted Two of Wands, it’s not a bad time to question your assumptions—both over how “made” somebody else has it and how made your own life is. Look at what job belongs to whom, and ask yourself if you’re doing your own well enough, addressing your priorities in a way you’re satisfied with. Use a Mars focus for your energy now—focus on yourself and what YOU want to get done. The rest will sort itself out and you’ll feel less unsettled for it.
