01/13/12: Making Change Permanent | Temperance

temperence-meaning

“Temperance is simply a disposition of the mind which binds the passion.” Thomas Aquinas

I’ve started to pay attention to my weight again…it’s been a while. Some of you know, I lost over a hundred pounds, several years back. And mostly, it’s stayed off. But gradually, almost imperceptibly, it’s been creeping back. Christmas cookies, M&M’s on special occasions (and boy, are there a lot of special occasions if you look!), a bite here and a nibble there, all adds up.

I know this. I have coached countless others on the very same issue. But here I am, in full realization that if I don’t rein myself in, bigger pants are in my future. And I have to ask myself, “Why?”

The challenge comes not from wanting to go back—I wasn’t happy, nor healthy. I was courting Diabetes, straight up. It’s also not because it was ungodly difficult to do the work. It was actually a lot easier than I could ever have guessed! I could blame stress or lack of time or any one of a number of peripheral issues, but that would be bull. I know in my heart, it’s attributable to a lack of temperance.

Today’s Tarot is Temperance, number 14 of the Major Arcana. Her astrological association of Sagittarius is a hint that she’s a “big picture” gal. As one of the Tarot fives, you also know the energy surrounding her is dynamic and often, conflicted. She arrives to address drinking issues, needed compromise, or situations where moderation and blending disparate interests are required for the highest outcome. Temperance is where the polarities of Tarot—and hence of life—are reconciled harmoniously.

Merging is a concept central to Temperance. The secret is always in the mix! You don’t have to give up treasured prizes to achieve resolution. You DO have to exercise thoughtful self-control, however, to prioritize. It’s not haphazard; rather, a precisely executed merging keeps all considerations in exacting proportion to properly unite.

In my case, that means that I don’t have to abandon what’s important to me. I have a sweet tooth and no amount of low-carbing erases it! So, it’s my job to combine my tastes with choices that support my long-term goals. There are days when I feel tired or lazy and don’t want to cook. Knowing this, instead of turning to DQ I can prepare with easy options on hand ready to go. The point is integrating my most important desires and requirements into a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. It’s not about willpower. It’s about creating the right mix. Compromise on what does NOT matter to create a whole that includes what DOES matter.

It’s interesting to see this card appear shortly after “Death’s Promise”, as it follows Death in the deck. The transformation (Death) of the old ways has occurred, and you’ve got your fresh start. So what are you going to do with it? Let’s hope something’s different, lest you end up back where you started, huh? (Yeah, I’m looking in the damned mirror.)

Considering the cards we’ve been seeing lately, I can’t help but think there are some majors shifts going on out there! That’s a little scary, I know, but even more, it’s exciting! Change comes for a reason, and Temperance is a prescription for integration, thus making changes permanent.  Well worth the trouble, don’t you think? I sure do.

11/24/11: Happy Thanksgiving! | Temperance?

Temperence TarotI always laugh when I get something like Temperance (Sagittarius) for Thanksgiving! (No, this isn’t the first time.) This version from the Rosetta Tarot is Thoth flavored, titled "Art." Diana, the Moon Goddess, merges with Apollo, the Sun God, for a very androgynous, yin-yang synthesis off all that is.

And in a nutshell, that is what Temperance is all about—the synthesis. You take two, combine them to make one. (Let’s just hope it’s not two pies combined to make one tummy ache!) You can work both active and passive, speaking and listening, doing and waiting, conviction and empathy. All is rectified, set right through the process of integration.

Seeing Art, I know not to consider any idea, action or circumstance in isolation. It is all part of the bigger picture and for anything to work properly now, it needs integration. Look at the whole thing, and seek ways to unify all considerations fairly.

Today, I’m thankful for all the insights I’m able to grasp, whether they feel good, bad or indifferent. It’s all part of this canvas we paint, the energy we work with, that is the human journey. There is a place for all, where we each fit. Harmony doesn’t come from merely giving or taking now—it comes from integrating all perspectives into a whole. This a table big enough to seat all.

How’s your Thanksgiving?

10/29/11: Temperance | Secret’s in the Mix

temperance

“Temperance is simply a disposition of the mind which binds the passion.” –Thomas Aquinas

Today’s Tarot is Temperance or “Daughter of the Reconcilers,” associated with Sagittarius. This version from our funky Housewives Tarot shows a cake being mixed up with a few surprise ingredients. With Temperance, it’s always about getting the right mix; too much or too little of individual components just leaves an unappetizing mess.

Tarot_14_TemperanceWe’ll often see Temperance when thee is a need for moderation—too much drinking, too many demands, too little flexibility. She’s your hint to be inclusive. Like a Sagittarius, look for the bigger picture. A steady hand and clear head is required for the best outcome.

You’ve got to honor all the ingredients, even those not especially to your liking. Too much of that Instant Anger may spoil the flavor, but a sprinkle under the right circumstances helps it rise to the occasion. Each ingredient has it’s appropriate place and proportion. The secret is in the mix.

How’s your cake tasting?

09/05/11: Integrating Opposing Truths | Tarot Temperance

temperence-tarot

Diversity: the art of thinking independently together. –Malcolm Forbes

My husband is a political news junkie. He’s an absolute master of gathering and weighing information from multiple sources, regardless of the speaker’s premise or political orientation. Far left, far right, conspiracy theories and everything in between, he listens to the story to evaluate on merits.

This may not sound impressive, but I’ve actually found it shockingly rare. Double Virgo is excited by food for thought, and can hear substance even in beliefs diametrically opposed to his own. I am endlessly impressed by this skill and try to emulate it. It’s made me a more compassionate person.

Today’s Tarot forecast is Integration, aka Temperance or the Daughter of the Reconcilers, associated with Sagittarius. In this rendition from Osho Zen, we have the Yang/Fire/Masculine/Eagle/Sun side, and the Yin/Water/Feminine/Swan/Moon expression. But we’re not balancing polarities here—we’re integrating, where the two become one.

I seldom discuss subjects like politics with anybody but my husband now. I’ve got Mercury/Uranus; my thoughts (Mercury) will always be weird (Uranus). That’s not a self-criticism, by the way. I like my thoughts just fine! But I don’t trust most to hear them without trying to convert me or making various unflattering assumptions. It’s incredibly off-putting to be perceived as uninformed, misled, or otherwise lacking by reason of honest difference in perspective. So not surprisingly, I avoid it. I’m perceived as odd enough as it is.

Temperance reminds us that we don’t always move forward by “winning over” the opposing side. Just like the Yin has a bit of Yang at it’s center and vice versa, each polarity includes core elements of the other’s truth to stay in balance. Harmony is the result of respect for this diversity, allowing synthesis. Sagittarius would approve of broadening one’s horizons via exposure to the other. So today, I’m looking for the truth in other people’s truths, to incorporate what fits into my own. Even that which doesn’t fit can grant me a more complete understanding. I honor everyone’s right to select their own path, as I expect my own to be respected.

Can you see the worth in others’ truth?

Everyday Tarot, 07/03/11: Temperance Blender

temperanceA lot of folks—myself included—have had odd, bizarre, just plain taxing experiences under the current sky. An eclipse amidst a Cardinal Grand Cross with outer planet players is not necessarily going to be a skip in the park, to put it mildly.

That’s okay, though. When the energy forecast supports making significant shifts, why not take advantage? That’s my plan.

Today’s Tarot is Temperance or “Daughter of the Reconcilers,” associated with Sagittarius. Key XIV of the Major Arcana, she becomes one of the Tarot fives—her angelic energy is definitely dynamic! She’s often said to be mixing fire and water, but whatever she’s mixing, she’s appears to know what she’s doing. With one foot in the water and one foot on the ground, she has access to both the emotional/intuitive world and the flesh and blood, material world.

The gold disk on her head sports the astrological glyph for the sun, which is also the alchemical symbol for gold—her ego shines. The red triangle on her robe is the symbol for fire—she hasn’t lost the passion. But like the road that runs between the two mountains (goals), she is looking for balance, a way to combine separate energy to come up with a new, more complete approach.

I had opportunity to revisit some hurt feelings recently and try to integrate memories with new  circumstance. The key for me was realizing that it’s not one or the other—the history is real, and as such, impacts the whole. But the present is just as real, and demands integration with the history to form a new, more complete paradigm. With only one of the two, I’m missing half the truth.

When Temperance graces, look at the big picture. Are you over-attached to one vision? Are you successfully integrating information?  Or are you drinking too much lately? ‘Cause she’ll call you out on that, too. Moderation in all things, and Temperance is kind. Otherwise, there’s a price to pay.

Do you see Temperance at work (or maybe on a break) in your life?
