Signs in Real Life: Goldfinch Mobs & Missed Blessings

So, I’ve got my Birdseed Oracle Cafe going, full swing. Little birds coming and going all day long. And as long as the seed is there, the signs, they come.

Except for one thing.

I suck at identifying birds.

I try to take them one at a time and keep it fun. Who’s obvious? Cannot miss Bluejays or Cardinals, and the black and white and reds give away the flavors of Woodpeckers that come by. Some are distinct enough I can easily identify them. But others can give me trouble.

I posted a picture of the “Warblers” I was getting at the Cafe. What I didn’t mention is that I’d initially been rather disappointed with them.

See, I love the colorful birds best–shhh. Don’t tell the others. It’s not their fault they don’t wow me. I just cannot hold a grudge against a Starling or Grackle, even if the behavior is boorish because they’re so damned beautiful. I thrill at the way those iridescent colors glint in the sun. But the same is true of any beautiful bird. I get excited seeing a boldly-colored Jay or Cardinal swoop in, because of the way they stand out.

Yes, the birds are all lovely, in their own way. And maybe it’s wrong of me to feel the way I do. But I do get more excited seeing more impressive birds.

The birds that were mobbing my feeder? Eh. Not so impressive. But as they continued arriving en masse over the course of days turning into weeks, I thought I’d figure out what they may be saying. I decided they must be Warblers, based on a picture I found someplace.  I looked at Warbler messages. It’s all good stuff.

And I’m looking to line up with this energy. So I make the decision to consciously appreciate them more, as is. I make note of their grace, and what I notice to admire: how politely they got their food and share space, how lovely they are in their own, understated way. How bravely they weathered Thor the Warrior Kitten staredowns from the other side of the window. These birds had spunk! Once you change the energetic channel to appreciation, you can find a lot to see.

I stopped (internally) complaining about who the birds were NOT and began loving them for who they ARE.

I was doing a good job of appreciating my Warblers, I think. I posted a picture of them. That’s when my double Libra friend came to my rescue and SO very politely–like, so politely you could have missed it, if you weren’t paying attention–pointed out that my mob of “Warblers” was actually made up of Goldfinches, not yet turned gold.

Ooops.

Not really Warblers, to someone who has a bird-clue.

The good news is, I could expect a glorious color explosion later this spring of sunny yellow. The even better news is, their color is determined by the quality of their diet. In other words, I’m directly contributing to the show by serving up the seed. That’s cool!

As if on cue, the next day I saw some of the birds starting to molt. The gold is beginning to peek through.

Not-yet-Goldfinch suspiciously eyes Becoming-Goldfinch

Now, I associate Goldfinches with joy and blessings, among other things. So the whole mistaken identity episode gave me a good laugh. Because I was surrounded by these birds, day after day after day. I had multitudes of blessings all around me, but I wasn’t recognizing them. Point taken.

Well played, Universe. Well-played.

Over the coming days, I’ll be watching them molt, a witness to the transformational process. Some look a little sick, or at the very least unkempt as the actual process of change is messy. Not any different from us. And I’m sure they’ll have more to say to me, as I watch them change and apply what I observe metaphorically, in my own life. My transformation process can be a little messy sometimes, too. But it doesn’t mean it’s not going exactly as it should.

Are you able to appreciate what you’ve got, even if it doesn’t look just like what you’ve wanted?

Playing that Hand: Weekly Tarot Forecast, Oct 12 – 18

For whatever cosmic purpose, I’ve been rubbing elbows with a whole lot of grief over the last few months. It started with someone in my circle who lost her son way too soon, and branched outward from there. We’ve more than tripped my 3-times rule, so it’s definitely on my radar.

I’ve noticed–it’s not how people handle the good stuff that speaks to their character nearly as much as how they handle pain.

That kind of pain can cause people to shut down, close off their energy and go underground. And I’m not criticizing. You do what you can do, dealing with pain. I don’t judge on tiny little bit.

But other times? I’ve seen people use that experience to say, “What is really important? Who do I want to be? How can I live better?”

It’s like they have harnessed the power of that intense pain energy and used it to open up the heart, you know? And that is both bittersweet and beautiful.

I know what I aspire to. Just hope that I–and most of you–have little need, anytime soon.

You play the cards you were dealt. And that’s what this week’s forecast is about.

Lots of Major Arcana on deck – Three in the daily draws and one for the overview. The week has import. A couple of Cups, one from the Swords, and a late appearance from the Pentacles makes up the week. We start with looking for our hope (0r adjusting the story as required), move on to managing our emotions, and finish out the week rethinking what really makes us happy and what our hearts say. The week ends with reassessing–what’s in our heads, and what works or does not, on a practical level.

Monday, Joy & Stability, Star Reversed: A little difficult accessing optimism for the future? I hear ya. It’s not gone altogether here, but hard to fully believe sometimes. Be right here, right now. Appreciate the fact you have what you need TODAY, right this very minute. That’s so much more than so many have! Ground and appreciate whatever you’ve got. That’s how you turn it up.

Appreciate having what you need TODAY, right this very minute. #gratitude Click To Tweet

Tuesday, Take the Lead, Ten of Cups reversed: You cannot make everybody happy, but you can act from a loving place, you know? One thing we tried to teach our kids was that each person is responsible for their own feelings–while you are responsible for your intentions at the same time. People sometimes try to offload their own end of the equation but you gotta own your own self and nothing else. Compromise may be necessary; approach negotiations in good faith. Look for win/win.

Wednesday, Success & Growth, Knight of Cups reversed: Keep your emotions in check and centered. This may include a time-out and frequent grounding to do, but it’s well worth the effort. Distinguishing between emotional flux and actual circumstances pays dividends.

Thursday, Sacral Chakra, Five of Swords reversed: Discord stresses you out? I’m as conflict avoidant as the next gal, so I get it! But there is a call to make your “no” stick, if it was important enough to declare in the first place. I guess the secret is being picking only the battles that really matter. Focus on stabilizing and enhancing your own emotional state and you can also work out some of the stress via creative means. Anything you can cook up to be symbolic or metaphorical of what you’d like to see and execute in real life, setting your intention to use the energy that way, is a great way to do this. For example, if you wanted to reach an agreement with someone, you could write both your names on a piece of paper, and put it in a book with the channeled intention infused into that paper that you are “on the same page.” Just use your imagination, okay?

Friday, Heart Chakra, High Priestess: Ah! I like this one. Listen to your heart, tune in especially to your emotional state for inside (psychic) information. One easy way to do this is to get quiet for a minute and notice the area in the middle of your chest–imagine mentally reaching out an invisible, energetic stream from that area to “take the feeling temperature” of the energy around you. What does it feel like?

Saturday, Solar Plexus, Moon rev: Anxiety, overblown worries. Center, breathe and operate from a rational base. Don’t make long-term decisions on the spur of the moment. Worries can be abated through sleep. So go ahead–leave your worries with your spirits and angels, and then take a nap!

Sunday, Dedicated Effort, Eight of Pentacles reversed: Consider ways your work routine may have gotten sidetracked. Projects can be employment-related or even personal development issues; we’re just talking long-range accomplishments. What habits would you like to build? What routines can you put in place to support your desired, long-term goals? Planning, list-making and strategizing are favored. You may not act today, but you can prepare.

Advice/Overview: Dreams Coming True, Justice: Ever write something and fall in love with a specific sentence or two? That’s why editors rock, man. Because that turn of phrase that just impresses the heck out of you may be exactly what needs to go to achieve your ultimate objective. This week is like that. Don’t let your ego run the show. It’s gotta stay about your objective. Expect to pay attention to staying balanced, reasonable and fair. Step back, take breathers if you need to. Look to isolate the emotional component of struggles and pretend you’re thinking about someone else if that’s helpful. Logic, reason, and pro-and-con kind of detachment will serve here. In other words, don’t become married to your approach or it may stand in your way. Because I want to see you achieving your dreams!

Affirmation: I will do my best to make the best of it. We’ve got what we got. Rather than bemoan what we don’t have, let’s do what we can to make the absolute most of what we do. Fair enough?

As I read this forecast, I know there is plenty I need to attend to here, myself. Okay. There usually is.

Do you feel satisfied with how you manage the hand you’re dealt?

CJ’s Missing all the Fun: Mini Chakra Check-in Tarot Reading

“Hi, Dixie. I’d love a mini-chakra check in, just to see what comes up. Thanks, cj”

I’ll be glad to see what we can get for you!

Short Answer: This feels like wearing a cloak of responsibility…too much to do. Share some of the dishes with the other folks who are eating there, and get some help if you can. Review your creative work to see if it still feels creative, or if it feels stale and draining. More me-time, and particularly joyous time in the kitchen, could sure lighten things up a lot…

Hope that helps!

Gemstone Guide: Doubling Firepower with Calcite

IMG_2082I hovered my hand above the baskets of gemstones, trying to pick one that had a nice vibe to it. Being in a woo-woo store, I knew I wouldn’t be looked at askance. I liked the look of these pretty green stones, and it had a good feel in my hands. So I took one home/dixiblog/domains/afoolsjourney.com/public_html.

Calcite comes in shades of gold, white, black, green, gray, yellow, blue brown and read. Lots of variety for this little stone! In the form of limestone and marble, it comprises a significant portion of Earth’s crust.

The stone itself seems to have a calming effect on me. It’s energy reminds me of the hypnotic effect of waves washing up on a beach. There’s an underlying vibration of power and inevitability about this stone to me, much like the expression of nature’s cycles.

It’s a stone of health associated with Cancer, so you can look for it to take care of you, just like your favorite Cancer might. You can bathe with it, lay it on your body or carry for physical healing, strength and immunity boosting.

Associated with the solar plexus chakra, it should help with a sense of personal power, a strong inner foundation. High-grade optical calcite was used in World War II for gun sights, in bomb sights and anti-aircraft weapons. How much more aligned with power could you ask for here?

“Calcite has the unique optical quality of double refraction. Draw a line with a pen on a piece of paper, then place a piece of calcite over the line. When you look through the stone, the line will appear to be doubled.” – Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic

Green calcite as pictured is said to enhance intuition and healing abilities, as well as physical issues connected to the heart, dissolving tumors and malignancies, and helping with sinus and lung issues. As green is the traditional color of the Heart Charka, I’m not surprised at the connection.

Caring for your Calcite: it’s not an especially hard stone, so beware abrasives.

Have you worked with Calcite? What do you think of it?
