02/23/13: Mission Not Impossible! / 3 of Hazards

“If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.” -Proverb

Okay. So the Three of Hazards doesn’t look like your standard Three of Pentacles. I’ll give you that. But you’ve got to hand it to this family, for solid planning. Dad’s trained the zombified Uncle Dave to fetch!

(Don’t ask me how I know it’s Uncle Dave. Who else but an Uncle Dave would wear that shirt?)

There’s no doubt it took a while to get from there to here. You know? It took consideration. It took planning. It took work to achieve a housebroken, well-mannered zombie pet who doesn’t try to munch on your frontal lobe for lunch.

It’s not impossible, whatever it is you need to do. Okay? Just break it down, list it out, take it one bit at a time. And before you know it, you’ll have it all under control. You’ll have your own zombies—er, ah, fears—conquered and well-behaved.

You don’t need to know HOW you’re going to do it all. You only need to know how to get a tiny bit closer to where you want to be. A single step, a little better, a tiny bit of improvement is all that’s required right now. That’s all you need to figure out in this moment.

Then, do it!

And look for the next tiny bit.

By the time you add them all up, the total effect is impressive. Your fears will eventually come serve you, by giving you additional confidence for having mastered them.

You have a choice. You can ATTRACT your fears. Or you can ATTACK your fears. Which will it be?

How do you attack your fears?

01/23/13: Warming Cold Weather | 3 of Swords

“To be in the self means to be apart, to be separate….To be in the self means to make a distinction between ‘this I am’ and ‘that I am not’. The definition, the boundary, between ‘I’ and ‘not I’ is what the self is—the self isolates. And it makes you frozen—you are no longer flowing.” –Osho

The Osho Zen–as usual—has a unique take on the Three of Swords. This version does emphasize an important aspect of this card sometimes overlooked: the isolation (here “ice-olation”). Can you feel the chill?

At times, I feel the chill a lot more than I’d prefer! Incoming vibes is not all sunshine and roses, you know. There is a cost to maintaining psychic sensitivity. If somebody gets upset with me, I may feel the chill even though I’m not looking for it.

Most of the time, the energy of this card is short-lived. That’s a good thing! And remember, Tarot threes are a CREATIVE energy, even the chilly swords/air suit. Threes are also the number of birth, so if this is where you are, it’s good to remember that whatever is, this situation is a result not only of your actions or someone else’s actions, but the combination thereof.

We identify as individuals, but we are all part of a greater whole. In that context, no one can ever truly be alone.

To soothe any chill, look for connections. Generously seek understanding and release that which doesn’t matter all that much anyway. Because really, does it? That’s what melts the ice of ice-olation. Warmth from connection.

Are you feeling isolated?

12/17/12: The Lightening | Rev 3 of Swords

“It’s when we start working together that the real healing takes place… it’s when we start spilling our sweat, and not our blood.” –David Hume

Not a surprise to see the Three of Swords. But very good to see it inverted! That tells me that however humble, perhaps in only small ways, no matter: we ARE on the mend. The heartbreak is beginning to yield to healing.

I won’t dwell a whole lot on the pain part—who needs a flow chart? But I will point out this version from the New Vision Tarot shows us the reverse of the classic Rider Waite. See all the people in the background? This heartbreak impacts many. Not just me. Not just you. Many, many, many. They all experience it in unique and individual ways.

As this card is associated with Saturn in Libra, it may be wise to show a little restraint (Saturn) in your relating (Libra). As my husband mentioned, he’s GLAD there are some things that people become absolutely, uncompromisingly emotional and irrational about. Some things should be incredibly disturbing in a civilized society…that’s a good thing. It’s evidence of humanity.

But staying absolutely, uncompromisingly emotional and irrational over the long haul is not such a good thing. It can end in attacks of people who are not truly enemies. In the heat of passion, one can end up stabbing some whose goals are the same, even if methodologies and beliefs differ.

But do what you can at this point to show respect for others. Your pain or outrage or hurt isn’t any more valid than anyone else’s. Tarot threes are creative energy. The experience of heartbreak is unique and individual. The assessment of meaning, the search for solutions, and the diving of truth from said pain is also unique to the individual. That’s why it can be such a powerful growth mechanism.

Know the pain dulls in the days that follow, Walk softly, and in love.

03/25/12: Sorrow to Divinely Inspired | 9 Swords, 3 Pentacles

Today’s Tarot is the Nine of Swords (aka Clouds, Sun in Gemini) and the Three of Pentacles again (Rainbows here, Moon in Capricorn). Like the traditional Nine of Swords, this image emphasizes a sense of isolation—the kind that visits late at night, when you’re all alone. This version of the Three of Pentacles is an interesting take—like all Tarot threes, a birthing is underway. Here, it comes from the mating of your mind and divine inspiration. One or the other won’t get you there. The inspiration has to be acted upon to impact your world.

Are you feeling sorrowful, isolated? Pray. Look for new ideas, serendipity, and divine inspiration appearing out of nowhere. Those little nudges you feel, one way or another? Incorporate what you’re getting, into your plans. This is the way forward.

Do you find divine inspiration in times of sorrow?

03/22/12: On-the-job training | Rev 3 Pentacles

“There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.” Buddha

Today’s Tarot is the reversed Three of Pentacles (Moon in Capricorn). Ah, those Cappys do love their planning! It fulfills an emotional need (Moon) for security (Capricorn). But no matter your chart, sometimes plans go awry. And it can be upsetting!

It’s okay. All is not lost, although you may need to remain flexible. But hey, how many innovations have been made exactly because of plans that have gone awry? People don’t succeed because of comprehensive planning, although solid planning matters. It’s not helpful to get pissed when what you willed didn’t take place the way you willed it.

Rather, people fly or fall based on their ability to ride the energy as it unfolds. You may have to fence in (Capricorn) your emotional response (Moon) to successfully ride the wave.

If your plans have gone amiss, maintain the pieces that still work for you and regroup the rest of your energy. The trick is not getting caught up in a big fluster over what’s shaken loose. Instead, see it as opportunity to enhance your mastery (Capricorn). You learn as you go. On-the-job training is underway: be a quick study!

Enough, Mama! | Rev Empress

“Yes, Mother. I can see you are flawed. You have not hidden it. That is your greatest gift to me.”  Alice Walker

[Editor’s note: This was originally written for 3/2 but didn’t get published that day. I have no idea why…So we’ve got it now. :)]

Today’s Tarot is the reversed Empress (Venus), one of the Tarot Threes, so it’s a card of birth. But inverted, we may blocked from mothering, or maybe we shouldn’t be doing so much.

You aren’t perfect, but you don’t need to be. Remember that.  Forgive yourself and set the example.

Don’t just hand the family dinner on a silver platter, okay? It’s always fine to support and nurture, but don’t do everybody else’s work. Because you know what? It doesn’t really help.

I get it. I have this drive myself. But many times, the most loving thing you can do is step back and let others live their own lives. It is an act of respect in their own abilities. It’s saying, loud and clear, “I have faith in you.” It tides those you love over, when they don’t have quite enough in themselves.
