I took on the role of mother young. This was an advantage to me in a number of respects, but most notably because I quickly realized I didn’t know what I was doing.
Understanding what you don’t know means you can educate yourself. So I read a lot. We’re talking books, because it was before the internet was so much of a thing.
I stumbled upon the book Children the Challenge and discovered how to discipline my kids without so much of the anger and frustration. I learned to step back from the power struggles and focus more purely on the natural and logical consequences of their behavior. That was the point of trying to socialize them. I learned to model the behavior I was hoping to inspire. From then on, my parenting became a lot more about what I wanted to teach rather than how I could force things to go a certain way because I was a bigger human.
The shift improved my life–and theirs—considerably.
Next week is a lot like the situation I faced when I was a newbie mom. Sometimes we get all tangled up in the question of how to do something while losing sight of the why. The “how” must remain compatible with the “why” or you’re working at cross purposes.
Next Week in Tarot
The outlook for next week shows up as The Chariot reversed, with advice of Strength. These are from the lovely Star Tarot Deck.
Both are Major Arcana cards, so I’m expecting the coming week to feel fairly intense. The issues at hand are very likely to be important to you. Expect your mindset to be critical in making the best of the week.
The Chariot reversed predicts a lack of focus–we don’t know where this ride is going! It’s not even so much an indirect route to the end goal here, but more like a careening ride to who-knows-where? This too-fast ride could be accompanied by a sense of overwhelm: too much incoming information invoking a general atmosphere of chaos.
We may have forgotten WHY we’re doing what we’re doing, instead noticing all the distractions. Add to that, any individual distraction may feel like a crisis. It’s sort of a putting-out-fires mindset.
Don’t bite, though, okay? It happens. And it’s okay that it happens. Strength shows us how to get back on course. It’s very possible to get your bearings in these conditions, but it’s not automatic.
Despite the name, the Strength card doesn’t advocate for a brute force approach, ever. The lady with the lion is gentle and soft. Her potential to tame the lion is realized through unyielding focus instead of strong-arming her way through. She knows her goal. She knows that a gentle, persistent and above all, a kind approach will achieve her objective successfully without compromising her own spirit in the process. While she never abandons her objective, she also never abandons her true self by acting in a way that’s not consistent with who she is. She prioritizes her own integrity above all else.
Follow her lead this week. Step back if needed and and ask yourself, “What do I hope to accomplish here?” Behavior executed in the name of reaching a goal must be consistent with the goal itself. In other words, the ends do not justify the means. The means create the end. You don’t fight for peace here. You love for it.
Hope that helps and that you are able to remind solid, grounded and centered in who you really are. It’s your greatest power.
