Everyday Tarot, 05/05/11: How to Wrap the World Around Your Fingers

the-world-tarot-card-morgan-greerSo much of the time, it’s very easy to look at what’s wrong exclusively. We worry. We obsess. We feel our flaws and inadequacies, even the most minor crowding out acknowledgment of all we’ve accomplished.  If ninety-nine things go wonderfully and one does not, we tend to focus exclusively on the one.

That makes the one thing, a misstep or poor choice or single, unkind word that gets singled out much more powerful than it’s due. Tarot has a suggestion, don’t you know?

Today’s Tarot is the World card, number XXI of the Majors and associated with Saturn, although CJ makes a good argument for switching this card to Capricorn and the Devil to Saturn instead. For me, though, it’s a non-issue. Every Capricorn has access to both the Devil and the World’s energy, because it’s just two sides of what Saturn can do. Same energy, but expresses in how you live it. The promise of the World is what makes up for the fears and restriction of the Devil. If you’re doing it right,  you master those chains of restriction with purpose.

The World is the culmination of the Fool’s Journey, synonymous with that part of the Hero’s Journey where you come back home to integrate and teach the knowledge you’ve gained. It’s sign of success. The symbols representing the fixed signs occupy the four corners. The path here is rooted in stability. The XXI reduces to a three, suggesting mastery here will bear fruit. The World is always very encouraging to see, because it is a card of accomplishment. All is right, exactly as it should be.  Celebration is in order.

CelebrateSo what if you don’t feel like celebrating? It’s good to remember our lives are not absolute, black and white dichotomies of good and evil, right and wrong, up and down. If our choices were always clear, we’d have no trouble with them. Instead, we live everyday in this linear time; how much of it is spent reviewing the past—not for clues to live better in the now, but to apportion blame and recrimination, even if but on yourself?

The World here is giving us a nudge to focus on that positive energy we’ve built, if we want it to grow. The hard times? Successfully navigating them is exactly what gives us the gifts that make being here, now, possible. As my husband is fond of saying (and I’m fond of cussing), “Builds character.”

Now is time to take stock of the character you’ve built and see what it’s accomplished. It’s fine to expect a lot from yourself—that’s a good idea! But do remember to feel good about what those struggles earned you. Getting exactly what you deserve can be a good thing. I hope so!

Is there something you should be giving yourself credit for?

  1. OH yes, yes there is. But it is not quite time yet, a little more work to do!

  3. “All is right, exactly as it should be.”

I just got a nice gift of spending the evening with some women with good hearts and laughter, after putting a lot of work into a project.

It was a culmination and accomplishment, as we were literally gluing the final pieces together to honor those who are teaching our kids. Weeks of work had gone into an effort to show a little love to the hardest working educators ever.

So… right on as usual Miss Dixie!
